On the heels of the recent New York Times article featuring the decor of the living rooms on the hit show 'Modern Family', comes our look at the beautiful family-focused set design on 'Parenthood' set in Berkeley, CA. The various characters' homes are all well-designed, warm and inviting. But our favorite design is the one shown above.
This is the only picture I could find online that showed this combination kitchen and eating space that leads to a patio area. Notice the play kitchen butted up against the kitchen island so simultaneous cooking can occur. In addition to the easel in the photo, while watching the show last evening, we also noticed other beautiful toys in clusters throughout the house. The patio included a small table and chairs set and our favorite IKEA rocking moose among other things. It's another beautiful example of how we can have a beautiful home without hiding all of our childrens' belongings away. I've become a fan of the show partly because I'm always hoping to catch more glimpses of this wonderfully designed home.

This house on parenthood (love the show!) always has toys everywhere in between all of the modern furniture. It amuses me because you can clearly get a feel for what the home looked like before kids (catalog perfect) and how they have let their daughter completely intergate herself in every room of the house.
Nice integration but why such an ugly doll stroller?
It's an ugly doll stroller because they all look like that.
@PutzFrau: LOL, so true!
The NYT article said what I was thinking, but better - “Modern Family uses décor to wordlessly yet clearly make a point: children will make you do crazy things to your once-perfect house.” I too have been enjoying the sets - particularly the clutter that occurs in normal homes, like stacks of papers on the hall table and baby toys strewn about.
My husband and I actually only recently discovered this show, but have been catching up this summer. They got parenthood so right! The show takes normal family moments to the absurd extreme, but the moments are still very familiar. Oh, and we were huge Boston Legal fans, so it’s great to see Julie Bowen again. She was funny in BL, but she’s perfect as Claire.
Ugly doll stroller: this reminds me of an article I read many years ago called, "When Bad Taste Happens to Good Kids". The author lamented about how her daughter, bestowed with a closet full of tasteful, beautifully designed, high educational value toys preferred a pair of sparkly high heels and her Barbie Dolls. It could be that the manufacturers design the carriage based on young girls tastes and not what is "hip" or "cool".
The title of this post is funny to me... It makes it seem like the post is about literally using children as part of the design. ;)
Um. Nope. Plenty of nice looking doll strollers out there just like there are plenty of nice looking kid strollers.
Yes, there are plenty of nice looking doll strollers out there, but I think the point k2yhe is making, and one I agree with, is that often kids prefer the sparkly, made-in-china, licensed character toys instead of their tastefully hip counterparts. The inclusion of a cheapo pink stroller instead of some miniature European thing makes the house look like someplace a real family would live.
