Amazing Libraries Around the World

We know you're out there. You bibliophiles who can't get enough of bookshelves stacked floor to ceiling, hallways lined with card catalogs, mahogany desks with bankers' lamps. We sympathize. We love a good library, too. For those of you who worry about your house someday sinking from the weight of your books, we've rounded up a selection of amazing libraries from homes, universities, and cities across the globe...

New Use For That Keychain Club Card

070209_clubcard.jpgSure, having a kcrw fringe benefit card on a keychain can be helpful for getting discounts around town and the yoga keychain card saves having to bring a wallet in to the yoga place. But today we found an even more useful, um, use for those convenient little cards:

Boat & Breakfast: Sailing Ketch Pintita
Baltimore

07-02boatkimber.jpg

It's no surprise that in Fells Point — a waterfront neighborhood still lined with cobble stone streets and steeped in maritime history — you would find a boat and breakfast. Yes, I said a boat and breakfast...

Ditte Isager: Beautiful Interiors & Circus Inspired Photos

Today is Friday for us at Apartment Therapy as tomorrow we have a day off in celebration of 4th of July. I thought I would share with you the beautiful work of a Danish photographer Ditte Isager. I have always loved the circus. My parents used to take my brother and I every time it came to town when I was a child. It was definitely a special event for the whole family. Ditte's circus photos reminded me of the art, costumes, colors, and decorations that I used to admire as a little kid. Enjoy!

Good Questions: To Paint or Not to Paint?

Sara sent us an email. She writes: To paint or not to paint? We inherited this dining room color when we bought our apartment, and I've been struggling with deciding whether to keep it or paint it. On the one hand, it creates a very cozy atmosphere, coordinates with the (original) light fixture, and stands out as a bolder pop of color against the more neutral color palette of the rest of our home...

Escapes: Traveling Without A Map

070209venice-01.jpgA friend from college found me on facebook recently so I decided to go over to his photo page to see what he's been up to. I was pleasantly surprised to find photos from our group trip to Europe. Even though the photos had been scanned in and were grainy in quality, I was flooded with memories from my first trip out of the country. The event that I recall most fondly from the entire month-long trip is when the group decided to explore Venice without the use of a map...

Look! Wine Rack Made of FedEx Tubes

7-2-09-fedex-wine-rack.jpg

Ah yes, we can certainly appreciate impromptu, but correct and recyclable wine storage. Putting one together on the spot would be a great ice-breaker at a party to hold everyone's wine contributions, but then again, an intimate get-together with that amount of wine may not have much ice to break.

Emma Balfour's Home

emma070209.jpgWe always feel so inspired after visiting The Selby. The photographs and the untold stories presented there are so great! Recently, more inspiration came via Emma Balfour's home. The tour featured several snapshots Emma's children's rooms. Bruno and Elliot's rooms feature great shelving with plenty of storage for their books and toys, simple furniture and plenty of colorful artwork created by them....

7-2-09trainstation.jpgLayovers and travel delays can be a drag unless you're "stuck" in a cool place. Imagine spending your layover sipping coffee under a domed atrium with a 4,000 square meter tropical garden with exotic plants and palm trees, or a station surrounded by water on three sides...

10 Things Camping Can Remind You About Home Living

7-2-09camping.jpg

Last week on our vacation we spent some time camping with friends—a wonderful experience that we hope to repeat soon. There are things we love about camping (s'mores, campfires, being able to see stars at night, the smell of the woods) and things that are less enjoyable (less-than-comfy sleeping mats, fear of bears), but one of the best things is the perspective it gives you on your everyday life at home. We were reminded of a few key points...

7 Driveable Destinations for a Weekend Getaway

070209_ace.jpgWe've got big plans this summer. Too bad we haven't actually finalized any of them. Yes, the sky is the limit for dreaming of the trip to yellowstone, the drive cross country and the European adventure, but the reality is that we'll probably have time for a couple of quick weekend getaways, maybe a week if we really play our cards right. So small vacations are better than nothing. Here are 7 destinations that are totally driveable from LA.
