This is one of those cases where we like the idea, but not necessarily the execution (at least wholeheartedly for our own place). The Living Wall Planter is a white cedar wood frame with a grid of "pockets" for soil and plants, allowing for vertical planting. Hidden away ontop is a top reservoir that slowly feeds your high rise of plants with a steady trickle of water, with a runoff reservoir at the bottom. More information and photos after the jump...
We'd like these more of the "frame" came with a more finished appearance, and with less of a lumbar yard industrial aesthetic. But plants, flowers, or succulents as wall art (and natural air purifier) make for an interesting idea (perhaps an herb garden for the kitchen?), and those inclined could easily paint or refinish the cedar frames into something more decor friendly. I agree, the frames aren't pretty. It would be neat to use several of these to cover an entire wall (completely flush, next to each other, no space in between). If the frames were slick and smooth the look could be dramatic. Conversely, if the frames were covered in slate, that look could be pretty great too!

The boxes on the site are cardboard, but I also saw them in glazed clay. I love the "chrome" rings.
Of course I don't know how the whole import-plants-to-the-US thing works.
I gave this to my sister to make an herb garden in her kitchen. She couldn't find a suitable space on her wall, so will probably hang it from the ceiling, which I think will be totally cool.
