Name: Antonio Ballatore + Chewie, the 6 year old English Bulldog
Location: Downtown — Los Angeles, California
Size: 3,300 square feet
Years lived in: 10 months — rent
To win a show such as HGTV's Design Star you must have an extremely rich point of view and a unique vision. I also believe what makes a successful interior designer is the ability to find what is special about the client and integrate that into the design. Antonio Ballatore, winner of Design Star Season 4, was warmly recognized for his ability to think way outside the box. Here's a look at his own highly personalized home.
Born in New York City, Antonio was raised in a small family home in upstate New York. He explained, "Our home started off as a little bungalow then grew into a larger house with multiple art studios because both my parents were artists". His entire loft is a collection of art, memorabilia, and rich tribute to people who have impacted his life. "My dad is also an avid collector so he filled our home with beautiful art and rare, out of the ordinary antique pieces, some of which have been passed down to me. My dad has been one of my biggest design influences and from him I've also developed his habit of collecting."
Each wall and every shelf is a curated display of gifts, artwork, antiques, pieces of his show – which all have a story attached to them. One of the most significant possessions can be found in his dining room. It started out as one of his father's art pieces as a tribute to American Indians. Gifted to Antonio in his early twenties, over the years he's added to it to make it very personal with "all the experiences of my crazy life". There are adornments such as his grandparents' funeral cards and crosses. He's also added things from ex-girlfriends, his first dog's tags, and even a locket of his mother's ashes. "It's a piece of art that grows with me in life."
Antonio suggests that he got into design by "accident". After running a local bar in Manhattan's Lower East Side, he went on tour to play music with some hardcore punk bands. After returning from tour one year, he ran into a friend who was building sets for photographer David LaChapelle. A year later, he was LaChapelle's full time set designer building elaborate sets for all his photo shoots. It was this very experience that opened many doors to Antonio's career, landing him on set with world famous photographers such as Annie Leibovitz and Mark Seliger. In my opinion, it is his experience of building these sets that set the tone for his personal design style. Sometimes more is more, and often it opens us up to a specific style home we never would have thought of.
Many of the elements of Antonio's loft are immediately familiar from his show The Antonio Treatment. He once designed the living room of a music industry affiliate, adding a huge mural of a photo taken at a Slayer concert. The same copy of this mural is the wallpaper that lines his TV room. He still has the same headboard and dresser, that he created during the first episode. The pink bird that grabbed him the first win of Season 4 hangs like a shrine over his kitchen among a matching pink wall.
Most impressively, there is ton of DIY awesomeness, like the raised living room space and custom built sectional (one part was literally the size of queen sized bed). He installed and finished his entire kitchen cabinetry out of reclaimed wood. He erected a staircase and built the bedroom and bathroom upstairs, along with separate computer office that hangs over his larger office down below. He has created the ability to show you intimate details of his world and parts of his life. You will never be bored in Antonio's loft because there is just so much to see.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Medieval cave dwelling meets modern loft living.
Inspiration: Friends, family, and everything around me.
Favorite Element: Too many to list. Everything has a significant meaning behind it.
Biggest Challenge: Getting Chewie out of bed.
What Friends Say: They say that the space definitely defines me and who I am. "This place is so you!"
Biggest Embarrassment: Chewie and the bathrooms that I haven't gotten around to completing yet.
Proudest DIY: The whole damn thing.
Biggest Indulgence: Collecting
Best Advice: Personalize and customize.
Dream Sources: I use my dream resources everyday! You can find things everywhere you look, from the side of the road to crazy flea markets to high-end furniture stores.
A few extra questions for Antonio:
What is the single most significant thing in your home?
This is a hard one. Everything I own has a meaning behind it and is significant to me. Things have been passed down to me from my dad, others are gifts from friends, special finds from flea markets, or things I've brought back from my travels.
When you think of designing a home what is the most essential part?
Making it personal and original.
How has the lifestyle and culture in Los Angeles affected your personal design aesthetic?
I don't think the lifestyle and culture in LA really affected my personal design aesthetic. I've been a set designer for 15 years and my work had me traveling all over the world. Traveling and being introduced to a lot of different cultures is what I like to think really influences my design aesthetic. It's constantly evolving.

ENTRY
- • Painting over the entryway door- by Niya
LIVING ROOM
- • Willams Road King Pinball Machine- from www.vintagearcade.net
• Studded Chair- from Suburban Home (Downtown LA)
• 18' Custom made couch- Blueprint Furniture
• Bison head-I received a call from a local guy in town a couple months ago letting me know that he had some really cool things for me to check out. He showed me a 2-year-old bison head that's been mounted and hung at a local bar for several years until they closed. He told me that before the bison head got mounted, the bison ended up going crazy on the farm. It jumped over the fence and ran directly into traffic, causing a 6-car pile up. It continued to rampage through the neighborhood and the owners had no choice but to put it down. I ended up taking the bison head home with me along with a fiberglass rhino head that the local guy threw in for an extra two hundred bucks!
DINING ROOM
- • Table and benches- Environment
• Smaller throne chair- Melrose Gallery
• Human skull- Handed down from my dad, which he got back in the 60's. He traded an Egyptian mummy's finger for it.
• Large kings throne- My dad purchased a late 17th century Spanish throne in the early 60's. He eyed the piece for while but no one wanted to buy it because the original owner from the 17th century was assassinated while sitting in it. The chair had the original leather and the stab hole from the murder so after my dad bought it he reupholstered it. Growing up I really loved the chair and would spend hours playing on it so my dad promised to pass it down to me some day. After winning season 4 of Design Star, I had to design my home for the first episode of my show "The Antonio Project." Keeping his promise, my dad shipped over to me the king's throne and it was featured in the show.
KITCHEN
- • Counter tops- Ernsdorf Designs
• Butcher block- Real Door Inc.
• Cabinets- custom reclaimed lumber from B&B Lumber
• Kitchen stools- Environment

I've searched high and low for those damn tiki kitchen canisters!!! :D
Patiently waiting for Antonio to find me and fall in love with me.
Wishful thinking,
Pepper

Wow! Whats with the skulls?
pepper you have competition. antonio i am single and i am obsessed with your place.
Didn't we see that pink wall earlier this week?
I've always wanted to live in a place like that. All that exposed brick...*sigh*
Can't stand him, Can't stand his show...
...yet with the exception of the tattoo-art headboard and the human skull (Khmer Rouge Chic?) this is a pretty cool place - far better than the stuff he foists off on people on TV.
I am IN LOVE with his entire space. Nice record collection too, from what I can see. Is he taking girlfriend applications? Looks like us gals at apartment therapy are ready to apply....
Antonio is the only Designer other then myself that I would let design my house. The guy is just next level! He gets it! Keep it up A...EK
Can I have Chewie?
I like his "take no prisoners" design style. The bedroom just cracks me up. So cheesy in a fun way.
This guy is totally cool.
Antonio rocks my world! Even my hubs gets a huge kick out of him.
His over the top style is not for us geezers (too many tchotkes, among other things) but we know real artistic talent when we see it.
And, it's a joy to watch his show -- he throws himself into each job 100 percent and seems to be having a ball doing it.
Maybe it's the for-real New Yawker in him that we New Yawkers love, not to mention that he appears to be real sweetie.
Not to worry, Antonio: I am not single and you are young enough to be my kid, I'm pretty sure.
Love ya.
OMG I luv this place. Just love it! I thought I saw everything on the show but totally missed the tv room. So great!
Wonderful colours, composition and creativity in this space! A few too many skulls and tchotkes for my personal taste, but it looks like a genuine and comfortable space.
Human Skulls = Khmer Rouge Chic?
There is a lot to see here, and much to admire.
What I do not see are any living plants (well, possibly in the fish tank, but I'm guessing those are plastic). I think they would add to the ambiance, plus they're healthy for you!
I was thrilled when he won Design Star. Antonio is awesome and so is his place. Love the throne, and the stories behind everything!
& i thought i had too many skulls/skeletons/images of death... inspires me to keep collecting! love his place to pieces.
So folks can post all they want on AT about how "disgusting" and "immoral" it is to decorate w/ animal hide rugs, but I post a wisecrack about decorating w/ a Human Skull and it gets deleted?
Really, Bethany - Incredibly lame.
He lives sort of near the garment district in LA--nice building.
Love the pink, the skulls, and the kitchen is terrif. Also, can't beat that fantastic exposed brick! Antonio must have magnificent poise and balance, bc if this were my place, I would knock that cool stuff off the stairs just about every time. ;)
Very... kitschy.
Love the multi-colored woodwork, the pink tool chest, Chewie, and the dedicated home theater alcove-room (such a small TV for a dedicated home theater room though; IMO he should get rid of the "built-in" entertainment center and go for a projector and large screen).
The evolutionary series of skulls on top of the cabinet near the door are cool, but I don't care for any of the others (especially the one in the kitchen on top of the toaster oven... so wrong).
What Cara100 said!! And the space is very cool too :)
@ pepper and others. I saw Antonio coming out of Ralph's on Barrington & Olympic several months ago. Geez.....dare I say....the guy is hot and seemed to be really, really nice. Sigh....way too young for me but a girl can dream. :)
This place was so fun to look at. I don't think I could pull off this sort of thing myself, but I enjoyed checking it out. I especially like the reclaimed wood in the kitchen and other rustic touches mixed in with the more wild style throughout.
I'm so loving that sectional, that's my kind of couch.
Also adore that you're a rocker dude with tats that loves a good hot pink punch of color... that accent wall and tool chest, in the words of Rachel Zoe... "I DIE....".
"FUN!" is the word that kept coming to mind while viewing this tour. And that is one adorable, photogenic dog.
This place has mucho personality!
Good grief, it's like living in a tattoo.
But in a good way :)
I like the ramshackle, self-built, found object aesthetic. Everything feels like an extension and expression of the man living here.
This is some visual steak: it's gonna take awhile to digest.
I really like this guy. He's unique, edgy, fun and lovable.
Love the exposed brick and the wood rafters. A real loft, as opposed to a "McLoft" one finds throughout the DC metro area.
By "McLoft," I'm referring to a number of new development condos here with exposed ductwork and a building name like "The Manhattan" or "The Greenwich."
I really wanted to like this but have mixed feelings. Love the kitchen, dining room table, that couch! But just too much stuff (dead stuff) and I'm usually a big fan of 'stuff'. And the bedroom does nothing for me. Kind of scary. But I do like his daring style - haven't seen his show since no cable. Will have to catch it somehow.
I doubt I'll ever be able to afford a place this nice but I can always dream.
I love the space, I think Antonio is adorable, artistic and fun, BUT WAAAAY to much stuff. This would drive me insane.
i love chewie.
It's like a modern haunted house.
A work in progress. . .
I had no idea that a rented loft would require you to build your own kitchen and bathroom/s. The way he tweaked this open loft to create private spaces for himself is genius.
I love the idea of the second floor cave like bedroom. I would imagine that in the main space with so many tall windows, there would be a lot of light coming in not to mention the outside noise making the bedroom a quiet, private retreat. Nice...
The Ballatore style seems to be about surrounding yourself w/the things you love. I feel like I just got permission to keep my 3, rather simple collections and minimal chachkes.
For an artist, it may be more difficult to let go of those things that connect you with your inspiration. My garage full of numerous professional collections will be easy to let go of in comparison. In fact, can't wait to let them go.
Can't stop smiling...
The viewpoint of looking into the tv room was interesting, with the large arm outside the door it gave me the feeling of looking into a doll house.
It's an enthusiastic space, a bit hectic for my taste. The stuff of Merry Maids nightmares.
The pink wall!
sara alana
The Best House Tour EVER, this is!!! The skulls, the sectional, the collections of stuff, the mural and all the artwork, the bedroom, Chewie is adorable, Antonio is smokin' hot... I can't get over it.
His whole place is awesome. It doesn't seem overly done. It seems like stuff he collected over the years and really loves. I took a little bit from every room. I just moved and I am trying to combine by hippie/carefree style with my guys sensible style. Hard.
Great Place Antonio!
The media room--- those guitars, that album collection, the wall mural, the curtains---
Sexy. As. Hell.
I just want to squeeze, kiss, hug, roll around the floor with Chewie.
Nice pad, Antonio!!!
adorable. and the owner isn't bad either. ;)
great place!
Antonio,
Love your space. As many friends as you have I think this larger space is great for you. I loved the first home you shared with us but I feel like you can breathe in this one.
I love that you collect art work and keep things that mean something to you that have a story. To me it makes your home more special. Come visit some day and you can meet all my displayed memories. (Kiss and Pee Wee Herman together, dig it.)
Love your show, you are very creative. I envy all your resources and crew that has got your back.
Was Chewie having a play date? Is that a Chewie bottle opener? I'll take old timey pinball over video games any day. Okay, I think I covered most everything.
Keep up the exciting work.
While this place is not my cup o' tea--at all--I truly admire Antonio's heart, spirit and confidence and I enjoy his show.
Love the rhino head - I would be tempted to mount it on my car if I was still driving the LA freeways.
Would definitely buy a set of Chewie postcards if you made them!
Rented for 10 months?? This loft looks like it would take the average (which you are not) person 10 years to decorate and to acquire the great collections you have. I love it, and wished that there were even more pictures to drool over. No wonder you won Design Stars. Your work is like no other, totally AWESOME. This is one of the best Apartment Therapy listings I have ever seen.
I really appreciate that he creates such personalized spaces, and takes major risks in his designs. I enjoy looking at it, even if I wouldn't choose that style for my own home.
Just goes to show that the "Design Star" format isn't useful for identifying design talent - after all, it is just a reality show. I was appalled that Antonio won his season and detested all of his designs on the show, but when freed from the silly reality show limitations and given a generous budget, he has come up with some very cool spaces.
Who's this, a friend? So tiny! :O
Apartment gives off a sort of maximalist A COOL DESIGNER LIVES HERE vibe that I wouldn't go forbut it's impressive, naturally.
what is it about men named antonio?....and oh, by the way, nice place!
Nice couch.
Yes... Yes. Yes!!! Oh God. No. Oh No. Not again. Oh Lord. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. This almost never happens. Really. Never. I swear. It's only when I look at an Antonio interior. Honest. I'm so embarrassed. Really.
I like the apartment. As for the dog, he's adorable, but, and I don't mean this to sound bitchy, he's really overweight. I was guilty of letting my boxer pug cross get too fat myself so I'm not judging, but all that weight is very hard on his heart and joints.
I don't relate at all to the living spaces or decorating, but anyone who has a dog with expressions like Chewie can't be all bad. It looks like they have a very fun and funny relationship.
I like the kitty in the tank :D
And the swapmeet type blanket on his bed haha my parents love those
I like everything except the human skull. He has lots of fun stuff that sort of reminds me of the way we used to decorate before HGTV. This is wonderful as I can totally feel the person who lives here and not just some formula. He is clearly living with all he loves in an organized way. Way to go!
I love the "head case"!
Love the "for those who are about to rock" mural! A fantastic home for two great bachelors - tell me Chewie hasn't hooked-up with some mind-numbing poodle!
I prefer my lofts with less clutter. Looks like a prop shop.
This is what I love...a designer who shows their home and it's not picture perfect organized and designed. Yes folks...designers live like real people. Our homes are not perfectly arranged and designed like you may think or see in most publications and websites.
Whatever happened to his little house that they fixed up on the show? Must say this is a major upgrade, and definitely the kind of place I'd picture Antonio living in. Reminds me of my folks place (they're far cooler than I)
On a more important note:
Big 'ol tattooed sweetie designer complete with bulldog? It's always been too much for my little heart to handle.
Just needs a cool frickin light fixture in the kitchen, those cheap paper lanterns gotta go.
He did note that designing and acquiring some lighting for his loft was next on his list.
This guy certainly has a lot of fans ! Not living in the States, I haven't seen his show, but wonder how the responses to his home would have read, had he not been a popular celebrity designer. The loft itself is a fantastic space, but I find all the little groupings of 'clutter' less than appealing. I love 'stuff' but, for me at least, the smaller 'bits and bobs' just look messy ... particularly in the kitchen, where they are displayed on undersized shelving, on that vast expanse of wall. The stairway and adjoining wall are just as cluttered and make me think of a Saturday morning 'display' .. at someone's garage sale. ... In short, I'd love to go shopping in his house but, decorated the way it is, I'd definitely not want to live in it !
I think he is very creative. I just dont care for the style myself. It is a little over the top. Just like a room filled with chintz, its just too much
Love Antonio, love Chewie (how could you not???) and love the loft. Clearly Antonio's design style is not for everybody, but I think it's great. Love all the stuff because you can tell that they are things that he has acquired through the years and most likely are of great sentimental value to him. Kisses to Antonio and Chewie!!
And by the way.....Chewie is so NOT overweight.
I JUST found out about this guy by accident last weekend while flipping through channels (they had a marathon on Direct TV's Audience channel) LOVE HIM, his designs, his personal loft apartment and I especially love Chewie.
Not that it really makes a huge difference, but since the majority of comments raved about Chewie, I thought I should point out that his dog is an OLDE ENGLISH BULLDOGGE. I know this because I have one too and is just as lazy and adorable and snorty like Chewie is. (PS my 3-yr old OEB needs a BF. ANd um, so do I -hint hint-)
Anyway I love how he uses punches of the color pink. And I love how tacky his room is. That cheesy blanket would probably not work anywhere else. His place is not my fave of his work, but I love what he does on the show. Very edgy, unconventional and his use of RECLAIMED WOOD!
Please do my house in Texas!
I love that his style is edgy, but not childish. Its a fine line that designers walk. I love kitsch, unexpected playful pieces, and incorporating all of my craziness into a space, but I do NOT want my home looking like a 15 year old emo girls bedroom. Antonio keeps it classy :)
(and yes, everyone loves Chewie! Thanks for adopting him instead of powering the puppy mill!)
Wow
