Inside Man Q & A's

Q: I've got a black lab that loves to get up on the sofa when I'm gone, and I'm always having to clean my couch, which, admittedly, isn't that nice anyway. (I've tried putting books on the sofa to keep him off, but he's a smart guy and he just knocks them down. I don't want to do mousetraps or anything like that.) I'm finally ready to get a new sofa and I was wondering if you have any ideas for a slipcover or throw or something to keep the fur off? - Sent from Brian in San Francisco

A: Brian, you could go for a leather sofa, which is pretty easy to keep clean — and leather Chesterfield sofas are always in style (although they can be pricey).

There's also a company called Crypton that makes pet-proof, stain-proof fabrics for people in your situation, and they sell sofas or fabric for a custom upholstery job.

If you don't want leather or you don't have the money to get a custom-upholstered sofa, Crypton makes something called the "Throver" that's designed as a less expensive option. It's basically a dog-proof blanket you can throw over your couch, and it starts at $99.
