Chihuly’s Breathtaking Glass Sculptures Are Now at New York Botanical Garden
The Seattle-based artist responsible for creating some of the world’s most exceptional colored glass sculptures has bestowed his talents upon the New York Botanical Garden for the first time in over a decade. According to Architectural Digest, Dale Chihuly’s vivid display of artistry is helping the city come alive in spring time by way of his CHIHULY show, which showcases more than 20 of his signature captivating glass pieces.
From April 22 through October 29, NYBG visitors have the opportunity to take a stroll amongst the multi-hued glass installations and get a close-up view of drawings and early works that reflect the advancement of Chihuly’s artistic process. Additionally, during the “CHIHULY Nights” program, the outdoor exhibition receives an extra dose of vibrancy as the installations are illuminated to cast an energetic vibe over the garden’s 250 acres. Various artists and musicians are on hand to provide even more entertainment for guests, who can also partake in signature foods and themed cocktails while admiring Chihuly’s handiwork.
“All of my work presented at NYBG is site-specific,” Chiluly said of his show. “I design each installation with the space and the visitor experience in mind. We had an exhibition [there] in 2006, so I was familiar with the garden; however, there are new areas, like the native plant garden, that provided new opportunities for innovation.”
Among the NYBG exhibition are Seaforms, a curvaceous coral-hued structure that serves one of Chihuly’s own species of “sea life; Reeds on Logs, a towering series of stretched red molten glass; and the stunning Sapphire Star, an eye-catching installation comprised of blue and clear spires.
