Name: Hakarl and Jili
Location: Williamsburg
Size: 550 sqft, 2 bdrm rental
Favorite: the wonderful daylight
Years Lived In: less than a year
Hakarl arrived in Brooklyn from Berlin over 6 years ago with only 2 suitcases of clothes and a teapot that his mother received as a wedding gift 40 years ago. The wide range of relics and beautiful lamps, mid-century furniture, and retro items are, therefore, all relatively recent finds.
He trolls flea markets and thrift shops on West 17th Street as well as nice neighborhoods' curbsides. But he doesn't just acquire things. Hakarl is innovative at every turn. He makes creative use of a limited budget...
Do you have an idea for a house tour? Let me know! jill@apartmenttherapy.com
Jili likes blues and greens and Hakarl likes reds and oranges. They didn't want to compromise with a beige apartment, so they decided to go with a calmer pallette than their last apartment but had exciting and bright accents. While Hakarl seems to do more of the scavenging, Jili has strong opinions and will exercise veto power when necessary.
Hakarl and Jili's apartment is a testament to the fact that money is only a small part of the design equation. Their apartment emanates beauty. It is arresting from the first point of entry. And when you learn all the secrets behind the presentation, it is even more impressive!

This is one of my favorite apartments ever. I love how a few accent colors and treatments made such a huge diufference, especially in a mean little rental kitchen (much like the one I've got).
You have a very happy realm in your mind, Hakarl! I first noted this in the pictures of your home, but when I read about the lamp with no base finally meeting the umbrella base, I knew it for sure. I love this sense of inspired discovery anywhere, and you whole apartment is filled with it.
I miss the days when I lived on W 88th and found all the most amazing things other people threw out! What was wrong with them?
Hi. Where did you get your dining table? Thank you. Great apartment!
This post is extremely late but I must know where the slim cart in the kitchen came from.
