This is a great idea on many levels. In addition to making a clever base for seating, flat files would be great for storing art supplies and completed kids' artwork.

Are the flat files under a piece of furniture, or is the futon pallet directly on the files? Is the cabinet sturdy enough to hold (human) weight on top of it without warping?

Too much going on. The colors, to use an old-fashioned word, clash.

Cheery looking, but is it really a contemporary photo?

We had our flat files custommade from wood (in our office room), with the preconceived intention to give it a double purpose of a seating spot for watching movies on our computers. We only added several futon pillows on top, and vertically behind one's back to lean onto the wall - and it's great! The only downside is we forgot to add a little stopping ledge, so the cushions tend to slide forward when one slouches too much.

Too bold for me - what's wrong with just sitting on a sofa?

Prints aside (the hot pink bumblebee pillows aren't my favorite), the bones of this project are fantastic. Paper storage, work nook, and guest bed all in one.

I would love a cozy nook like this...so nice!

the photo itself is from another country. the style of vibrant colors and patterns in a white room is typical swedish style (a la ikea). the cozy nook idea could be effected and decorated in whatever style you wish.

I built a set of plywood boxes and put a mattress-y thing from urban outfitters (with a cover I made...it was cheaper that way than making the whole thing from scratch) on it for a window seat. I made a bed skirt type thing to cover all the crap I store in the boxes, and it is rather presentable now. It doubles as a guest bed.

i had the same sliding cushions problem with a window seat i made and i don't like the look of a stopping ledge. Velcro.

great use of the flat files, can't wait until i have room to get a few, love the idea of using them for seating, however you really have to have just the right space do it like above, doubt you're going to be getting ones of craigslist to ft the hole that exact.

Now onto everything else. Don't know how you could read with the walls and everything else yelling at you so loudly. I mean, come on, that is crazy loud, and not in a good way.

alysaaria - if it is a high quality flat file it will support your weight, We used to sit on the ones at school al the time, and I am over 200lbs. However, it would not hurt to have a small frame above them, since they are expensive...

If you love flat files (as I do) look for them second hand. I am a librarian, and the ones sold for library use are solid but pretty expensive. (You could definitely sit on them, though!)

The metal flatfiles won't hold you, unless you build another platform around them. You could use a platform bed frame, and slide them underneath. as flatfiles go for around $300 for 5 on CL, you might want to find another solution.

My mind would flutter with so much print and color. It's great for people who love it.
