Growing up in Arizona, sun porches and sun rooms were often a necessary luxury. When summers couldn't be enjoyed outside, these shaded respites at least allowed us to feel like we were outside without risking dehydration and sunburns in the 120° weather (I don't care how "dry" the heat is&helip; that is just plain HOT!).
Here's a roundup of sun rooms and porches we would've happily spent lounging in during both the hottest and coolest days of the year (and everything in between):
TOP ROW (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT):
1 - This sun room by Amy Neusinger uses a pair of glass doors to create an indoor outdoor space that essentially feels like a patio.
2 - By painting the floors and walls the same shade of white, this sun porch feels bright and open even on the cloudiest of days.
3 - This screened porch was originally open, but the transformation by Architect Gil Schafer allows other rooms (like the adjacent dining room) to floor naturally into the space.
4 - The wicker furniture and slatted floor keep this sun porch feeling like a true outdoor space.
5 - The floor to ceiling glass doors of this sun room make the indoor and outdoor spaces feel continuous, as do the coordinated furniture and accessories in both.
BOTTOM ROW (FROM LEFT TO RIGHT):
1 - The unfinished ceiling gets a luxurious twist from a crystal chandelier in this modern sun room.
2 - The use of wood to frame the doors and finish the ceiling as well as the creamy white walls pull together the mid century aesthetic of this minimalist living area.
3 - The green and brown palette used in this sun room helps to bring the wooded valley outside the windows into the space.
4 - The shape of the wicker daybed mimics the peaked ceiling in this gorgeous sun porch in a remodeled ranch house.
5 - Jan Showers was particular in using yellow accent pieces to mimic the sun and vintage Murano glass to capture the light that bathes this beautiful sun room.
