Contemporary Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa says, "The door handle is the handshake of the building". What kind of handshake does the entry to your apartment or house present as guests enter your home?
We've gathered here some custom door knobs that give this hardware the attention due to such an important first impression:
• 1 Hand-Le knob by Naomi Thellier de Poncheville, produced by Pols Potten
• 2 Plumbing pipe handle in Montreal via Ripe Green Ideas
• 3 The Decorative Hardware Studio
• 4 a custom door lever by Alvar Aalto, via Abitare
• 5 turned wood door knob from Chloe Alberry, via The Telegraph

The handshake has to be the coolest doorknob I've ever seen.
That hand-le is amazing!
Shame it can't be found online
CREEPY
I like the leather wrapped one a lot, but although the hand knob is a really cool idea, it kinda freaks me out.
Think of the decor possibilities. You could buy gloves for your house. Bracelets. Rings. It could hold your bags while you look for keys!
I bet it's cold too...
That hand is HORRIFYING, lol.
I like the leather wrapped lever a lot too.
A door knob first has to be comfortable in the hand. And then it has to be not too painful if you run into it. That hand-le thing fails on at least the second count.
A door handle should look good as well as feel good in one's hand...it doesn't necessarily need to make a statement...it should compliment the overall feeling of the entrance. If the door handle stands out so much that you remember it then it has probably been over-designed. That said, the Hand-Le is just a little too creepy!
that hand is all kinds of creepy. and a little anti-lefty too.
Is anyone thinking Addams family here?
creepy. And difficult for the lefties among us.
im a lefty and i don't think it's a problem. my right hand hasn't atrophied... i actually open doors with my right more than my left.

I love the hand. I love how it invokes a reaction! Wonderful and creepy.
The hand reminds me of a visit I made to the doctor years ago to get cleared for contact lenses. Her hand was like a cold, dead fish and I still shudder when thinking of it. No other appointments have ever made them memorable, this one did. No hand-knobs for me.
The 'hand' is a love it or leave it kind of thing. It is an adaptation of a door knocker from the 1870's. Look In The Attic still has the original moulds and make the door knockers still today. Personally, I think the hand would make a great left/right lever door knob.
