This season's HGTV's Design Star is over, but one great idea for the nursery sticks with us. If you watched the penultimate episode you'll remember the fabulous hull frames that Dan Vickery created for Jason Priestly's nursery.
Dan used wood and rope in his nautical-themed nursery to create large and small hull frames that he then suspended from the ceiling. It's a beautiful DIY mobile idea that can be done on a smaller scale for smaller rooms.

I loved his nursery the design! Thought the Boat Mobile was fabulous.
i saw this episode and LOVED the boat idea the entire nursery was lovely i dont usual dig big themes but it seemed very cozy and not over the top themed!!

Honestly, I could not stand this room. I thought it was way too chaotic and disjointed. I agree that the boats are visually interesting but they are not a mobile- they are stationary. I know the judges loved it, but not for me.
I loved the room...does anybody happen to know where the whale decals came from??

I saw this episode and I hated this nursery. I thought the "boats" hanging from the ceiling were stupid--they're not mobiles as they don't move, and there's no reason for a baby to look at them as they are static and a boring color. I hated the "art piece" he did; I can't stand when designers cheap out on art and instead of looking for a poster or print they slap some unused paint from the room on a canvas and call it an original (enter designer's name here.) I also thought this room wasn't very functional as a nursery. If I walked through it in the night to get to a crying baby, I'd kill myself falling over all the furniture in the way. It's filled with items that are inappropriate to a toddler, and there's nowhere for a toddler to play. I personally think they let Dan survive this week because they wanted Antonio to win overall, and they didn't want him to be up against Lonnie in the finals. At least one of the judges has a baby, I thought she would have faulted this room more.
You hardly notice the boats in a chaotic room with 3 gliders and a sofa(!) and pillows everywhere, but a nice idea for a better context.
BTW, who puts a TV in the nursery???
Love the color scheme and the theme, but I think it would be better without the furniture in the middle. All that wide open space would better for a baby to 'use' instead of just decorated to look good. Also, all those vases will be dangerous once baby is big enough to pull up to standing. LOVE the whale decals too! WHere are they from??
Yeah, I thought the fix was in because Lonnie's room was way better than this one, i.m.o.
I liked the mobiles (do they qualify as mobiles if they hang from a ceiling?)
I did not like the water painted on the walls or the art project. The curtains, while clever to mix 2 fabrics (a Vern Yip standard design), seemed too old. Burned out gold brocade for a baby boy? I guess it works for them, or they were just polite enough not to pick it apart. . .
I agree that it reads a bit like an obstacle course. Regardless, I love the profile of the matching sand colored gliders. Does anybody know where they're from? Or where I could find something similar?
Whats with all the gliders?!! I love the large mirror...hope its anchored!! :)
