Last week, Christine and Pierre introduced us to their kitchen renovation project, where they'll be combining a small kitchen and adjacent sunroom to create a much larger, more functional kitchen. This week they're sharing with us some of the inspiration for their new kitchen.

From Christine:

Our style is a little bit rustic, cozy and eclectic. The apartment has some really nice bones in some places — nice tall baseboards and huge crown mouldings, a plate rail in the dining room. While there are no original details left in the kitchen aside from the radiators and the wood floors, we'd like to make it seem like it could have always been there. I love the functionality of a modern space with the charm and finishing details of an older era.

I love the eclectic mix of textures and art happening here.

I have a design background, so I'm fairly confident in my eye. Aesthetically, we are pretty clear on what we want, but deciding on the actual layout of the space has been a real challenge. We are doing most of the designing ourselves, but we have a designer friend who will be our "expert opinion" on things.

The colour themes in my inspiration folder are pretty recurrent – black, white, and wood! As elsewhere in the apartment, we'll keep the walls and cabinets neutral and bring in colour with art, books and textiles. I'd like to have a small banquette with lots of colourful layered textiles. I'd also like to make room for books (one can never have too much book storage) and plants (the space gets incredible direct sunlight).

The materials we're planning on using:

• IKEA Adel cabinets in white
• Subway tile with grey grout, most likely
• Wood flooring to match the rest of the house (hopefully)
• Countertops – either soapstone or possibly some sort of engineered stone with the look of marble
• Some nice thick wooden open shelving
• For things like lighting, the island and some furniture elements, we'll probably try and find some vintage pieces to work in where possible.

Check out the full series (so far) and be sure to join us next week as Christine and Pierre share the budget for their remodel.
