Just because you might be low on yard space doesn't mean you have to live without a garden. Containers and window boxes are the best small space solution for growing anything from flowers to herbs and vegetables and even trees!

1 Wolly Pockets are one of the best solutions for small space gardening. They can be used indoors or out, on a flat surface or mounted on a wall, and come in a variety of sizes to grow a single herb or a number of plants.
2 Turning the tops of handrail into planters is a genius way to start a garden without needing any ground space. This Great Outdoors entry is also a great example of hanging planters and container gardens.

White Enamel Four-P...
#3 is incredible! I'm not impressed by any of the others though.
Some of these are good. Any chance you could do a post focusing on growing things indoors for those of us who live in apartments with zero outdoor space (i.e. not even a deck or a patio or an outdoor landing)? I've seen lots of things that involve installing shelves or hanging things from hooks, or putting things on windowsills, but seeing as we rent and can't put holes in the walls/window frames, none of those are really options.... :-(
Wonderful ideas. I'm stuck in several ways: cannot grow in yard (lead in soil + vandals in neighborhood) and last year we got bugs in our house and won't grow stuff indoors anymore. But we could put stuff on the stairs and window ledges. Thank you!!
I just bought a window box style planter made to fit over a porch railing. I have it positioned right under some hanging planters so it has the added benefit of catching any water drainage from the planters. I planted mesclun mix in it.
I live in an apartment but luckily I have a porch I share with 2 other apartments and the other tenants (and my landlords) all like my gardening efforts.
I made a knock off woolly pocket last week. It can be tied to a balcony if that is an option for any of you. Here is a link to the instructions:

Just a note for Ms Tiggy. If you have a sunny window that gets at least 5-6 hrs sun (a south window perhaps) you can use just about any type container to grow something. Herbs are easy in this respect. Good Luck and happy gardening
