Inspiration: Greensburg, Kansas

The town was literally blown down on May 4, 2007. But, when residents crawled out of their basements to survey the wreckage, they didn't simply see destruction, they saw a chance to start over.

Greensburg is being rebuilt as a model green community. The story has been covered by a lot of the mainstream media (here's a super informative article from Time magazine), but this was actually the first we'd heard of it.

They're taking advantage of renewable energy (wind and biofuel) and looking to build super-efficient homes.

What's especially cool is that this is happening in Kansas (!) and it is being done by people who wouldn't necessarily describe themselves as treehuggers. However, they saw the opportunity to do something that was financially and environmentally smart ... and they're doing it.

We'll be following this story for sure. Read more about it here.
