Production designers in film are color craftsmen, creating backdrops off which the characters will pop. Now think about that new pistachio Kitchen Aid mixer or that tangerine mid-century ottoman you scored at the flea market. Take a tip from some of our favorite movie musicals from the 50s and 60s, and consider a monochromatic color scheme - whether set against a dramatic navy blue or varying shades of grey, allow some of your favorite statement pieces to have their very own Judy moment.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Can't believe you didn't include "High Society"!
Cool idea!
I have seen Singin' in the Rain twenty times and never noticed the color scheme...I guess that's why I love your website!
Always something new and cool!
I always think of 2 things in regard to this topic; 1. monochrome does not distract the viewer from the star on screen. 2. Some of these films were done in technicolor and so they made sure to use color ( Marilyn's dress)
Love this! (Especially the "purple passion" shot of Tony & Maria from West Side Story....)
No "Umbrellas of Cherbourg"? Now, there's some color!
great idea ... i like it.
Interesting concept.
I second KayinKCMO--I want to see "Umbrellas of Cherbourg."
A Star is Born..love the Mid-Century Modern Livingroom...WOW..great way to look at that pop of color!
I clearly, see your point here...Astaire's black and white totally pop out from the subdued shades of blue..showing even black and white can pop..
love this!!!
Oh, and you showed my fave dress from 'There's No Business...' - Mitzi Gaynor rocks!
On this note, old musicals are my main inspiration - until I get a steamer trunk like Leslie Caron's in 'Daddly Long Legs', my life will not be complete.
I like it - I'm inspired. My landlord would likely kill me ;)
