I love the way a cord cozies up a modern space, the rustic relief it brings to a refined receptacle and the all-out call-out of winter it evokes.
So join me, won’t you? Let’s sit by the fireplace (or imagine that we are), sip our hot chocolate (or hot toddy, or hot coffee) and enjoy the evocative, woodland essence of an ever-comforting stack of firewood…

I heat with wood, and NEVER take it indoors until I'm ready to burn it. Once the logs warm up, all the bugs inside come back to life!
inchbranch knows what she's talkin' about. Stacked wood is pretty, but you're asking for trouble keeping it indoors.
I was wondering about that inchbranch, things living in the wood. We are getting a wood stove next week.
love that rug in photo #1!!!
We had a woodbox growing up, and I don't remember bugs being an issue. Of course, it had a lid.
These photos make me happy.
Kate (NC)...don't let me scare you off! Wood heat is the warmest, coziest kind. Well-seasoned wood that has been sitting out in the woods drying for a year is bound to have critters in it. If you want to use logs for show, use freshly cut wood in the house, but it'll be too wet to burn.
inchbranch is right ... but it is so pretty.
We have a weekend home, and thought I have wanted desperately to do this type of treatment there, I cannot do it with the wood we use for our fireplace and our woodstove for the reasons mentioned above. We don't keep the wood anywhere near the house for that reason. Carpenter ants love it- not to mention all other sorts of bugs. With that said, I have been looking for nice birch logs and I am going to purchase some other wood as well to decorate with. Yes, it will be decor- but it DOES have a great feel and look.
Yeah, umm, the bugs?
The creepy crawlies aren't a problem for us because we burn a big stack pretty fast in cold weather (our woodstove is our only heat source). I wonder though, about the ones where the wood is stacked IN the fireplace... I guess it is just decorative. :)
Gosh, that firewood is all so pretty and neat. Am I the only one who gets messy/barky/dirty/oddly shaped wood?
I adore the rug in the first picture. I know its a persian rug generally but I would like to know about style and origin so I can find one like it in NYC. Anyone know details?
In the first picture; why would this person need firewood? The firewood is occupying the only place to have a fire.
@truemystique
I don't know about the rug per se, but have a look at ecarpetgallery.com
They have thousands of Oriental rugs, and you can search by pattern, region, etc. That might give you an idea of the style that you like.
I don't really get the need for wood if one doesn't have a working fireplace or stove.
We haven't noticed any bug problems with storing wood inside, though we only bring in enough for a few evenings at a time. The rest of the huge stack lives in the garage and I wouldn't want to stare at it in my living room for eternity.
I really want to do a fireplace like this. Any ideas on how to get "pretty" wood without the bugs? I've been searching around online without much luck. Is there something you can do to treat it?
I really like the example from Elle Decor the best.
