Why not create a window Christmas tree with slides or transparencies, no frame required...
Or display Christmas cards as they arrive in a tree or wreath form from a yarn wall display...
It would be a great time of year to hang up all the things passed down to you from friends and family members that aren't typically your style: Commemorative plates, doilies, vintage ornaments, spoon collections. Mix and match, arrange them in a tree shape and the overall effect will be personal and charming!

I am glad to see that tree again! I fell in love with it last year and I have been gathering trinkets around the house for the past month in order to reproduce it on a smaller scale on my office door at work. Last year I made a Post-its tree on my door.
I love this idea - that room is beautiful! I would even leave it up year round - maybe change a few small trinkets for different holidays... thanks for showing this great project.

When I saw the thumbnail of Schouten's alternative Christmas tree, I honestly thought it was the Star Trek symbol all prettied up. I was so glad to see on further inspection that it was not. :)

Never mind the tree... what is going on with that wall-mounted bookshelf? Or maybe it has legs that are obscured by the stool, can't tell. Either way, I love it and want it!
I thought it was meant to be a row boat... Love it and the idea, but more as permanent art.
Part of the point of a Christmas tree is bringing in live greenery to your home in the dead of winter, so fake trees always seem to be the centerpiece of a point missing party.
I'd love to see some tree and decorating alternatives that involve greenery!
Formerly "live" greenery is not an option for people with naughty felines, and personally I don't care to kill a tree so that it can be decorative for a few weeks, so I appreciate hearing about alternatives.
I prefer to bring in greenery that I've trimmed from living trees. In fact, you can usually get a lot of fallen pine branches from a giftmas-tree joint for not too much money, and decorate with those. You get the scent, the look, and the concept without having to kill a perfectly good tree.

I live in a small NYC apartment and was seeking a low-cost alternative to a live Christmas tree this year by doing a wall tree of my own. I purchased two, sturdy nine-foot-long artificial pine garlands, bent them in the shape of a seven-foot-high tree, and then mounted them on my wall using a picture hook at the top and brackets at the bottom. After mounting them, I decorated them with the tree lights, tinsel garland, and ornaments that I have amassed from years gone by. I am pleased with the result and the price: less than $20.
