Small spaces present many challenges for homeowners and good design emerges when those challenges are used as opportunities for creativity. Alternating tread stairs provide a way to move from floor to floor when the spaces is tight and steap. Check out these inspirational stairways after the jump.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I love the first set of stairs...Imagine running up them in socks, or after you've had a couple glasses of wine.
the first one is an overhead shot
re: "the first one is an overhead shot"
Regardless, it looks like a broken ankle (or two) waiting to happen.
i'd give a kidney for that first set of stairs. gorgeous.
"the first one is an overhead shot"
THANK YOU for posting that. It's been hurting my brain to figure those out LOL.
I'm going to have weird dreams about these, I just know it.
I agree that the first one looks like a major hazard (and I realized immediately that it was an overhead shot). I know it would tarnish the visual effect, but those bad boys AT LEAST need a railing to help prevent serious injury.
Thanks for the heads up about the first picture, it was hurting my brain too. Not to be a killjoy but I think there was a post about this awhile back and someone pointed out that many of these might be against builders code?
Since I broke my ankle (on very normal stairs), I have an extremely negative view of any stairs that you can only climb if perfectly valid.
We're currently re-furbing an old house/cottage and we have to squeeze the stairs into an awkward space.... and it has to come up to code!!! I don't think these will do.... though I wish they did!
