It's that opening photograph of the kitchen that made us fall in love with Stephen Shubel's fisherman's cottage. Stephen has created beautiful interiors in great escape destinations such as Paris and the Loire Valley. The affinity for all things French is evident in his work. This home is his own escape in Sausalito and was originally a 1906 Fisherman's cottage. There's one surprising fact about these photos...
They were taken in 1998! (I have shoes that haven't aged as well!) The key here is the simple color palette. The walls are white with only a smattering of yellow and black in the upholstery and drapes. He stuck with classic shapes for the furnishing. We're sure that this space has seen many a redecoration since 1998, but even if it were to stay exactly the same, we think it looks pretty darn good. Of course, we're suckers for stacks of books! I saw this in a magazine years ago and loved it. It's so serene and yet stylish. I even forgive the homeowners for starting the trend of chair upholstery that says things.
