Inspired by India

Considering it is not just one of the largest countries in the world but an actual subcontinent in itself, condensing the style of India into a few short phrases would be doing an injustice. The homes are as varied as the cultures, languages and people in which they contain. So instead of trying to wrap a name around it, we figured we'd just show you a few interiors from India that we enjoy, and one from right here in San Francisco that is inspired by the country.

India was the inspiration for this Pacific Heights home designed by Jay the Jeffers Design Group.

Take a peek into Bollywood movie star Chunky Pandey's fuschia and teal-laced home by PFA Design Firm.

Taschen's International Interiors series of books is always filled with lots of design inspiration, and the India edition does not disappoint.

Ohhhhh, the third picture with the daybed.... I could spend some time in there for sure! Can I have your room please??? Even the door is beautiful!!!

AT must be spying on my internet searches, picture 1 is my (dream) living room! Seriously, though, I've been trying to figure out how to incorporate vibrant, Indian-inspired colors into my turn-of-the-century home. And my choice for the living room is that pink and my couch is that neutral beige. I just checked out the Pacific Heights home, I'm seriously emerald-green with envy.

i want that low table/seating bench in the main picture... or at least a way to build the platform. joann fabrics can help me with the rest. so pretty, and would be awesome in my random 13x14 almost square living room.

I second the love of the third room. It kind of reminds me of my intent for my bedroom... I have a very sari-like duvet cover in soft blue-violet with touches of burgundy, chocolate brown, and a silvery sand color.

I think the trick to that room is in the filtered light and shabby yet bright window coverings. I could see simple sheer turquoise drapes having a similar effect, or perhaps a colour washed set of bamboo or venetian blinds.

Oh my, am I the only one who really dislikes the Jeffers home? To me it seems like they've taken all this wonderful stuff... and crammed it all together into a melon-colored, overstuffed American version of the Raj meets Bollywood... without the texture and contrast of actual Indian interiors. If you look at the kitchen and dining room especially, something just isn't right. Maybe it's the lack of contrast with cool white? It's the cool whites against dark woods and pops of bright color, metal, and/or pattern that create a tropical feel to me... and large plants, both of which this place is mostly lacking. That said, they do have a lot of really beautiful objects and details and I don't want to be super negative... but I do think the Taschen photos and Archana's home in Bangalore are much better examples of this style.

I am so in love with this room...I think this is absolute perfection!!!!!!!!!!
