Name: Henry (newborn)
Location: Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.
We spent almost as much time cleaning out our tiny 80-square-foot office (which was also storage for our various collections - my thousands of CDs, my husband's old Macs) as we did prepping and filling the nursery for our son. But once it was empty, it was exciting to see how we could make the room comfortable and not too crowded.
When we got married our wedding was orange (Bob's favorite color) and gray (my favorite color). We didn't mean to replicate that in the nursery, but first we fell for a gray crib, then the orange chair, and everything else seemed to fall into place.
Bob repainted the walls and trim and an old IKEA dresser. The ceiling fan was there already, but he spray-painted that steel-gray to go with the rest of the room. We also took off the closet door in order to save space and made a curtain to hide the mess instead.
The Calder-inspired mobile over the changing table was made by my mother. We took her to the National Gallery of Art to show her a real one, and then she set about recreating it in our color scheme, all for about 10 bucks.
The rest of the artwork includes two WPA reprints (representing where we each grew up), a Decemberists concert poster (hoping the kid shows up in December!), and some Fantastic Mr. Fox drawings - we hope one day he loves the movie as much as we do.
Thanks, Hilary & Bob!
