We wrapped up a whirlwind few days at Ambiente, the world's largest and most international consumer goods show in the world, where we were overwhelmed (in the best of ways) with gorgeous designs for the home. Though we had our eyes peeled for whatever we thought might be most interesting to our readers, we of course were on the hunt for ideas for small spaces. And we found some — some obvious, some surprising, some not-quite-available-in-the-US-yet — but all gorgeous.
Enjoy a peek at these eight products we came across while walking through the fair's astounding over 300,000 square meters of exhibition space. If you've been following us on Instagram, you may have already gotten a peek at some of these items. All might give you inspiration for your own small space (even if you don't purchase these exact items for your home).
1. Compact furniture: The Georg Console Table and Stool from Skagerak
Small in size but not style, we loved seeing Skagerak's Georg Console Table and Stool in oak in person (now also available in black). It could easily be used as a small console table in a narrow entryway, as a desk in the corner of any room, as a sofa table and more. The small stool is sturdy but slight in size. U.S. fans can purchase from Design Within Reach.
2. Wall hooks for any space: WOW buds by Aveva
These cute little wall hangers by Swedish company Aveva put a smile on your face immediately. Available in two sizes (small and medium) and newly available in some fresh colors, they're perfect for small spaces because they themselves are small but they're also flexible — you could use them in any room, in any configuration for just about any hanging needs. They're available for international purchase on their website.
2. Versatile pockets for your wall: Normann Copenhagen Pocket
These are such a favorite, and we loved spotting this display showing how flexible and handy they are while at Ambiente. Available in a whole range of colors and a handful of sizes, the hardware is hidden after you install them, and they can hold (and hide) all kinds of things around the house, working in just about any room. Designed by Simon Legald, these Polypropylene pockets were inspired by shirt pockets. Available on their website.
3. Expand your shower space: Koziol's Surf shower caddy
We enjoyed learning more about the Koziol Surf shower caddy during a special event at Ambiente called Speed-Dating (where a number of exhibitors had the opportunity to present their product in only 3 minutes Pecha Kucha-style). Simple, cheery (like all of Koziol's Germany-made products) and very handy, they hang from anything in your shower, hang from each other and give you a ton more storage (especially helpful if your home is very small). New this year is their extra-large size. US fans should search Amazon for them.
4. Make more room in your cabinets: MENU's Stackable Glass
Danish design company MENU basically hits everything they design out of the ballpark, but their Stackable Glass (available in three sizes) is perfect for folks with small homes, small kitchens and small cabinets. US fans can find them here (though they look to be on back order).
5. Make an entry (even if you don't have one): Alessi's new Pierrot Coat Stand
Pauline Deltour designed this very lightweight but sturdy new stylish coat stand from Alessi. We like it for small spaces because of the six rods that can hold a lot of weight — great for small homes that might not have a coat closet or entryway. Made from beech wood it comes with either white or dark grey joints. (Click above to find a place near you to buy Alessi.)
6. Display safety stylishly: Safe -T fashion Fire Extinguishers
Firstly, sorry for the blurry pic! But it shows off a large set of colors available from Belgium-based company Safe-T, manufacturers of compact and surprisingly stylish fire extinguishers that we had to show it anyway. As small space dwellers often know, sometimes a small space means having to "display" important things you'd rather hide (but don't have room for), and some places require things like fire extinguishers to be in view. These cute and colorful ones solve any ugly fire extinguisher issues.
7. Multi-use wall hooks: Gazel Wall Hook
These compact ceramic wall hooks are both hook and small cubby storage combined, giving those in small spaces two ways to maximize space. They would be an especially nice way to create an entryway for storing your keys and wallet if you don't have one. Available in white, black, blue, grey and red.
8. Make more room in your bathroom: WENKO Vacuum-Loc
We also spotted this product at the Speed-Dating event, and it could come in real handy for folks with tiny bathrooms. It's a suction device for non-porous surfaces like shower tiles that won't require any drilling (so great for renters, too!), but unlike flimsy plastic suction cups, these things can really hold! They come with a variety of attachments for whatever you might need to hang or store. WENKO representatives said they're not available in the U.S. just yet, but they hope to have distributors soon. You can also try an Amazon search in the meantime.
