Shaw's Original Fir...
We have the shake rattle and drum set and it's held out really well for over 3 1/2 years so far. We also have the same line's xylophone. The xylophone is musically correct, though I wish it were not plastic.
I bought the Melissa and Doug Band in a Box for my two year old. The other day she was sitting with a friend and banging the maracas on the box for a little "extra added" noise. Fun.
As a music teacher, these pretty much all drive me insane! The quality is just not there. My two favorite musical instruments for my daughter are both by Plan Toys...the multi-toned drum and a small metal rainbow xylophone. I believe the xylophone was discontinued, which is too bad because it has fantastic sound!
We have and like the Plan Toys multi-tone drum. We have a metal xylophone from Nova Natural with good tone quality. And we have "the band" from PT which is just okay but the baby loves, loves, loves the cymbal.
Most toy instruments are just awful-sounding but still better than their electronic cousins. Of course, the kids don't seem to mind.
