We’ll go ahead and say it because we just can’t help ourselves: these colorful solar system-inspired quilts by artist Jimmy McBride are totally out of this world.
The outer space subject matter feels contemporary, but is also rooted in quilting history. They remind us of a wonderful example of a solar system quilt that we recently spotted on the Smithsonian’s website, used as a visual aid for lectures on astronomy in the nineteenth century.
The quilts are available from Jimmy McBride’s Etsy shop, stellarquilts, and though they aren’t cheap (prices range from $1,000-2,000), when we consider that they are handmade works of art that would also keep us toasty, they seem well worth saving up our pennies for.

Probably the coolest quilts I've seen and worth the investment.
I don't know if I could stomach the cost as opposed to thinking up my own version to make, but THESE ARE AWESOME! I wish I could lay down the money for something like this for my space obsessed husband. Perhaps next year...
Gorgeous... Seriously gorgeous!
I think the price is totally worth it. These are art and useful objects at once, and they obviously took tons of time to make. Well done.
These are stunning and totally worth the price. I know just enough about quilting to value the time and effort spent on these. Completely out of my price range, but oh-so droolworthy!
I like the IDEA of this... the colors and some of the designs just look like vomit to me though. I would still say they're worth what they're charging, it's not easy having the patience and skill... just not my bag... baby lol
I agree with dunklekatze...the IDEA is great...but if I wasn't told what these were I'd have no clue
My son would kill for that galaxy quilt!
I love his etsy shop and really admire the beautiful quilts! I love the combination of the images enabled by contemporary technology with the traditional quilting method.
(Since most of the images depict other galaxies, it is really a misnomer to call them solar system quilts.)
