HGTV has introduced another House Hunters series - House Hunters on Vacation. It is hosted by interior designer Taniya Nayak. A few lucky families get chosen to go on their dream vacation and HGTV picks up the entire bill (where do I sign up). The families give Taniya a list of their ideal requirements and she narrows it down to three vacation home rentals.

We were lucky to have the chance to ask Taniya a few questions about the show. She also gives us a few tips for traveling and shares her dream vacation home rental.

Apartment Therapy: How do you decide what types of homes for the families to chose from?

Taniya Nayak: We find homes that meet all of their dream wish list items, but we also throw in a few surprises that might totally catch them off guard. We had a family of 8 that absolutely wanted their own bedrooms because they currently have 3 people in a single bedroom. Another family wanted to have their own pool with a spa tub, others wanted to be close to the beach. It's fun to watch them deliberate on which one they choose, especially with the larger families because everyone has their own opinion of their dream spot. It truly is intended to be an all expense paid dream vacation. While it might sound a little greedy at times, we are asking them to tell us exactly what they want!

Apartment Therapy: How do you make a vacation rental or hotel feel like home?

Taniya Nayak: It's important to fully unpack and tuck away the suitcases. Set up your toiletries just like you would at home. Some people like to pack their own pillows and sometimes even their own sheets.

Apartment Therapy: What should you look for when renting a vacation home?

Taniya Nayak: Look for the amenities that you want or need. Determine what activities you want to do while on vacation and see if the home you choose accommodates it easily. Some people love to cook on vacation. In that case, a gourmet kitchen might be on top of the list. Others may not even want to think about cooking and would prefer their own steam room and spa tub. Make your wish list before picking the home you want.

Also, go for adventure! Try something new and don't necessarily pick a house that is too similar to the one you live in at home.

Apartment Therapy: What are a few tips for finding inexpensive vacation rentals when traveling on a budget?

Taniya Nayak: There are great sites online like www.vrbo.com (vacation rentals by
owners). Avoid high seasons like school vacation. Share a house with close friends or extended family.

Apartment Therapy: What are your thoughts on swapping homes? (i.e. you want to spend a week in Paris and someone wants to spend a week in Los Angeles, so you swap homes for the week)

Taniya Nayak: I think that this is a great idea! Just be sure to be safe and make sure that the other rental is a trusted source. Keep your personal belongings at your home locked up and set proper guidelines for your guests.

Apartment Therapy: What is your ideal vacation home rental?

Taniya Nayak: My ideal vacation rental is a place that has a huge outdoor kitchen and an infinity pool with fire pits. I like to be near the action but still feel isolated and tucked away. I love traveling with friends, so a place where everyone has their own private space would be great!
