Architectural Features As Apps: Proto Home

A Los Angeles architectural firm has conceived residential architecture specifically like a computer, with features offered like app upgrades; "upgrade" packages that include photovoltaics, grey water irrigation system, home automation and home entertainment galore. The home is wired to tweet owners when visitors enter through the front door and smart technology is central to their vision. It's no wonder the Proto Home comes with its own User's Manual.

Nearly everything inside the Proto Home is controllable via iPad, thanks to the integrated Control 4 system.

Each Proto Home is covered under Lutron's Clear Connect RF Technology Network dome, which allows the homeowner to control all functions of the home remotely from any smart device: iPhone, iPad or computer. A digital HD projector displays the vitals of the home as a dashboard control. Activating the lights, music, security cameras, alarm system, temperature and even the fireplace is only but a touch away, from your bed or JFK.

Equipped with a HD projector which can display anything from your laptop to your choice of movie on the double height walls, this featured home from Proto Homes places a big emphasis on entertainment throughout.

The kitchen island itself is mounted on casters, which lets you switch it up depending on the kind of party you're hoping to throw. The pendant light fixtures fold up too, so you can get that fully customized look.

Meanwhile, the studio upstairs is partitioned to serve as another bedroom or left open as an office. By pushing the seating to the wall, you really create that precious conversation area for those looking for a break from the main party, but still keep that continuous feeling of an open space that's fully connected to the home.

All that said, the kitchen is truly the heart of any home, and this one is no exception. Whether you're entertaining or simply making a quick and easy weeknight dinner, the thoughtful modularity of the furniture, multiplicity of the technology, and shape-shifting nature of the home pushes the meaning of intimacy. By allowing it to literally transform into the kind of space you want, it becomes the kind of home you'd want to show everyone.
