It seems wacky and somewhat far fetched; but you'd be surprised that it's actually becoming a reality. It was only a matter of time, really.
Viper announced earlier this morning that they will be releasing a free app to start your car. The free app connects to your car; but you must have the Viper SmartStart hardware module installed. You can control five basic functions: It'll manage the alarm, unlock your car and/or trunk, start your car, the best part for us northerners- turn on the heat! Unlike most remote car alarms; the iPhone doesn't have to be within a certain range to work. It's an app after all, so it uses the cellphone networks.
We think this is an amazing iPhone app, and it's really exciting. It's certainly going to set you back a few bucks though. The app is free, but you have to have the Viper SmartStart installed in your car (between $299-$499) as well as pay an annual fee ($30 after the first year).
We're thinking apps like these are all the more reason to password protect and set up mobileme accounts (for tracking purposes) for your iPhone.

So now when I lose my cellphone or it gets stolen someone can use my iPhone to find my car (http://www.iphoneworld.ca/news/2009/02/28/icarpark-uses-iphones-gps-to-find-your-car/) , unlock it and ... sounds like a security problem to me.
However, if you lock your keys in your car, this would be a huuuuuge life saver.
