iQ: Smart New Cleaning Product Loses the Bottle

This new household cleaner comes in a tiny, 3 1/2-inch tall cartridge that you pop in a reusable spray bottle. Fill it up with tapwater, and you're ready to go. The cleaner itself is plant-based and nontoxic. North Americans use (and throw out) over a billion plastic cleaning bottles every year, so this is definitely something we'd like to see more companies try.

The only thing we might change? You have to buy an iQ-designed spray bottle to start with, rather than being able to use one you might already have around. Still, if you only buy the bottle once, that's much better than the standard products out there. Not only are you eliminating the need for bottles, by shipping a small cartridge instead of a heavy bottle (filled mostly with water), that's providing a huge reduction in emissions from transportation.

The scents sound pretty good, too: green tea, nectarine plum, bamboo berry (though what does bamboo smell like?), and papaya mango.

iQ cleaners are available at Hannaford and Sweetbay Supermarket.
