Q: Hello! Like many of your readers, my husband and I live in a small NYC apartment with no overhead light. So, we need a floor lamp! We tried an arc lamp and it didn't really work in the space so we're back on the hunt. I saw the Vaster floor lamp on the ikea website and it looked great so we went to check it out in person. Because of the very open and well lit warehouse space the lighting department is in, it was REALLY hard to tell if it was a bright enough light or not. Does anyone have the Vaster floor lamp? Is it bright?

I don't think it will be enough general illumination. From Ikea's Japan website, "The lamp emits 90 lumen, which is approximately equal to the light emitted by a 15-watt incandescent bulb". This info doesn't seem to be on the US website. For general overhead lighting or a dining room fixture, the rule of thumb is length of room x width of room x 1.5 watts. For instance, a 10'x12' room would be 10 x 20 x 1.5 = 180 watts needed, preferrably on a dimmer to allow for reading, dining, ambient light, etc. That level doesn't need to come from one light source; remember to layer the lighting....table lamps, etc. in addition to the uplight.
Lauren,
Could you put a hook in the ceiling? A plug in swag lamp might be one option. My husband and I used one of these in the dining area of our NYC apartment: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10194960/
There's no way that tiny lamp can provide you with enough light. According to the photo on the Ikea website, the bulb is about half the size of the base, which is 8 inches. For $70, you're better off looking for a floor lamp that provides more light. Try Home Decorators, Lamps Plus, and Overstock.
nope.
No, my friend bought 4 of these to light up his LV corners and they provided next to no illumination.
You are going to need many floor lamps, not just one, and not this one. Do you live by an IKEA? your best bet is to actually go to their showroom and see the lamps lit up in person.
I'd say try it out! If it works, get more, if it doesn't, try something else.
This lamp probably will not give you enough light to do tasks, but will give enough light to walk around by. You would be better off (if you stick with Ikea) Kroby . One thing about uplights is that they are dependent on the ceiling height and color. LED lights, especially the lower priced ones, use a single LED element and a focus lens. The light projected onto the ceiling tends to be sharp edged, rather than diffused.
