Is Prerecycling the New Recycling?

We'd never heard the word "prerecycling" until a few moments ago when we were reading a post over at Alternative Consumer about the Sodastream, a home soda maker.

So the definition of prerecycling would be eliminating waste before it even enters our homes.

Making your own soda is prerecycling all those plastic bottles and caps you would be consuming otherwise. Carrying your own reusable water bottle has the same effect. We guess carrying a reusable tote to the grocery store is prerecycling.

Is it just a fancy marketing term used to describe what we're all already trying to do? Or is it about time we had a word for an environmental movement that's every bit as important as recycling?

I thought there were three R's Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
I feel like all the things named here are either Reducing or Reusing... not 'Precycling'

It's a pretty clever way to sell things like a sodastream or reusable water bottles.

Marketing term... I think a matter of being knowledgeable about what resources you are using from the start is key.

If you need to view the world in black and terms as a consumer then it is a matter of what you use and don't use (precycle).

true.. marketing term.. but albeit a real idea and giving it a real world name to help people to think about this concent.

Yeah, I think this is called reducing. But if it makes people think about it, I can't complain.

Gotta say I love my Sodastream! I don't buy sparkling water anymore, so it's not being shipped over from France or Italy (Perrier, Pellegrino) and it tastes exactly the same. Plus as a lazy shopper, when I run out and want some I don't hop in the car and drive to Costco, now I just make it myself.
