Q: I am a renter and my kitchen has a pretty ugly wallpaper boarder on it. I would like to just put a wallpaper border the same exact size right over it. I really doubt the landlord will notice the difference or care. The only issue is that I cannot find any attractive wallpaper borders. There are a lot out there with mystical wolves on them, which is cool, but this has to be something my landlord will be okay with.
I do not want to even try to take it down because I'm an extremely busy student. I rarely make lasting changes to my apartments just on the principle that any increase in value should be done by the landlord, but I like to find sneaky little ways to make things look nicer. So, are there any attractive wallpaper borders (6 3/4" tall or more)? Also, you can see my curtain is green with light teal accents, so it would be cool if the border looked good with it.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Have you thought about covering it up with a peel + stick product? Take a look around http://www.wallpops.com . I've used one of their borders as a backsplash in my kitchen and always get compliments on it. Great part is, it's a low adhesive decal that comes off just as easy as it goes on!
Why not find a nice wallpaper you like and cut your own border? I've never done it but it seem like it should work. At least, it would give you more choices. I know that you said you are busy, but it's probably much faster and cheaper to remove the border than it would be to put one over top of it. Just sayin'
Try to find an off-white border, even if it has a white-on-white design. Then it will just disappear against the off-white wall.
I agree with cbreynolds. Cutting a border from wallpaper would be easier. If you get a geometric pattern, it will help you cut straighter.
You might just try getting some pre-primed white wood moulding to put up with some small nails. If you can't find any moulding wide enough, just mirror them off of each other by using two of them back to back, so that the same detail meets in the middle. Even if you don't have tools, you can get a hand saw and mitre box for pretty cheap and trim them to size.
Nope.
If you don't think your landlord will notice or care, why not remove it altogether? Surely tat would be better than a border two layers deep?
I honestly don't understand the mentality of a renter not doing any "work" to the apartment they live in because they don't own it. If it bothers you enough to blog about it, its enough to take action. In the time it took you to take a picture and email Apartment Therapy it could have been removed.
I've lived in my apartment for almost three years now. If I would not have made any changes and left it as is when I moved in, I would not be as comfortable as I am now and would probably be looking for a new place to live. Beige walls, insufficient lighting, mini blinds... For the time I am paying rent Im in ownership. Luckily I have a landlord that allows painting and other semi permeant upgrades.
For a new border to put over the existing and one that will enhance your décor, Jessie is right to say to check out WallPops. You can put one of their peel-and-stick Stripes over your existing border. They just came out with a line with Jonathan Adler, super stylish designs. See and order them from here: http://www.wallpops.com/dots-blox-stripes.aspx
Do a search for paintable wallpaper borders. This might be a good option, even if unpainted.

And here are some not too awful standard wallpaper borders:

There are no attractive wallpaper borders in my opinion. And I would ask the landlord before you do anything. We have one now that won't let you do anything without permission. Some people are just control freaks and will blow anything out of proportion. Better to be safe than sorry.
I would just remove it--it would not be that difficult--and it's not as if they painted around the border--so it will leave you a nice clean wall. Just spray it with some wallpaper remover and peel it off!
I used to have an apartment with a wallpaper border around the living room, and I found time to remove it while taking 16 course hours AND working full time. I think you can find time! If you try to just rip if off it can leave residue or bits of paper behind, and that's a headache to deal with. Google some effective and fast ways to remove it before you try to tackle it. I believe I ended up (with a friend helping me) just taking a wet sponge and wetting sections and then peeling it off. Didn't even take an entire afternoon. But to answer your question, there are NO ATTRACTIVE WALLPAPER BORDERS. Ugh.
(Anyone else equate wallpaper borders with those heinously ugly / tacky "wall quotes" or the terrible wall stickers for kid's rooms? Both of those just scream bad taste in the same exact way as borders to me.)
Definitely go with the mystical wolves.
Removable wall paper!!! http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/roundup-modern-removable-wallpaper-167208
Personally, I'd just get some white paint and "white it out." I absolutely HATE wallpaper and I dislike borders of all kinds.
Please don't paint over it. Removing painted-over wall paper, even if it is just a border, is not fun at all.
What I'd do is ask the landlord if you can remove it. If you can, do so. Then sit back and enjoy your new view of the walls.
If you can't, go and get the mystical wolf border and put it up over the one that's there. Use something that can be easily removed--thumbtacks, pins, that removable tacky putty that people use for posters on college dorm walls.
How about a border with ferns? My Mom used a fern patterned border in her kitchen and it actually looked really nice.
Pretty sure Reba is punking AT. Mystical wolves? Come on guys.
Nope, all wallpaper borders are awful! So use this instead:
http://decor8blog.com/2012/09/11/mt-casa-xl-washi-tape-for-decorating/
It's removable too and you can opt for a block colour or something with a pattern. It's just launched so will be available soon!
To those who posted WallPops and Washi Tape: THANK YOU! I don't have borders but I love some of these ideas!
I doubt it.
I was firmly in the "wallpaper borders are the WORST" camp until I bought the house I now live in. When we bought it, I knew I hated every single paint choice the previous owners made. However, in the living room there was a border wallpaper of a damask type pattern that was raised in the wallpaper. The cream and peach they had painted above and below the wallpaper was horrid, but a coat of charcoal paint over the whole wall (wallpaper too) and I just love the border now.
Not sure what any of that has to do with the original post, other than that if you look hard enough and the room is right, borders can work.
Regardless of what you go with, ask your landlord. They may be surprisingly easy to work with.
It's. Not. Your. Property.
Ask the owner (your landlord) for permission, don't just be "pretty sure" he won't notice. It's the legal thing to do. It's the ethical thing to do. It's the moral thing to do.
If you let him know you really aare unhappy with it, for all you know, HE will remove it for you.
Don't try to remove it. It might be a bigger mess, than you think. I removed our wallpaper border and even after sanding, priming, and painting the wall you can see the marks (besides the fact that it took hours and hours).
Wallpops are pretty.
I don't think another one will be any better...at all..it's a wallpaper border..this one is just fine..and removing can def make a line of demarcation...if it had 'relief' as an above poster, painting over the whole thing could look/add interest and taste..but wallpaper borders belong where they started, in the 80's or so..>: O
Whoa -- the pleasant fruit pattern is "pretty ugly"? But "mystical wolves" would be attractive? In the kitchen? And there are "a lot" of borders with mystical wolves?
I literally just had to grab my desk in case the room started spinning.
Washi tape stripes, chevron or whatever your taste.
what is width of border? easy weekend project would be horizontal postcards, if you have or similar, hung edge/edge w/clear pushpins & postcards often are glossy for easier maintenance.
