When I first saw this nightlight, which sells for $99, I was curious. Does it negotiate legal contracts, or rotate your tires? We all love to make it to the bathroom in the middle of the night, without stubbing our toes or taking a tumble in the darkness, but it would have to do something else to make it worth its MSRP.

Turns out it does...

The Leeo Smart Alert is the latest product in the trend toward home automation, and is designed to signal when something goes wrong in your house when you aren't around. So, if your smoke alarm goes off, and you're not there to hear it, the Smart Alert will pick up the noise and contact you via smartphone. It also notes temperature and humidity fluctuations, which might be handy in winter when you're worried about keeping your plants alive and warm while you're on vacation. And, lest we forget, it's also a nightlight as well. You can put it on a timer, remotely change the color of the light, and perhaps freak out your cats in the process.

What's new about this is that there's no need to install another device, or pay your home security firm for added services.

If you are interested in learning more, TechHive does a full review of the device.

What do you think? Is this something that would give you peace of mind, or is it a needless expense?
