Why I use color:
"Color makes me happy. Walking into a room that has so much personality always lifts my spirits. The ceiling and bed linen color is a balmy Moroccan blue that is the prettiest blue I have ever seen, and since San Francisco is grey much of the time (especially in the summer), it lets me pretend I live somewhere tropical before I leave the house. I painted the "stained-glass" window with translucent glass paint. It has a different look from day to night and blocks the view from the apartment building behind mine. I love coming home to this riot of color!"
"There is a LOT of color in my room, but there are only 5 total, plus white. Pick your favorites and stick to them. I used blue, orange, green, fuchsia and gold, but I used the same shade of each everywhere, and accented them with super white.
Don't let super bright colors scare you. Pick one that makes you feel something. Don't let it be the boss of you - make it work for you!
I picked a Moroccan style, looked up some Internet photos, bought some books, and picked out the main elements that I liked the most. In this case it was the blue against white, the orange walls and the pattern I made stencils for on the custom-built window furniture. There were a lot of elements I didn't use, and I didn't need any more to get the theme across.
Taschen makes incredible books filled with gorgeous pictures, that are inspiring in so many ways.
Your favorite photos and art can also inspire you. I have some great photos from Hawaii that show off some smoky greens and grayish-blues. The Basquiat exhibit in L.A. really made me want to spread paint around. Just keep your eyes open!
