In order to live up to our motto, "When in doubt, go out," I created a backyard pantry to keep all of our outdoor staples at the ready. Friends of ours were giving away a knotty pine armoire, which I gratefully grabbed, and placed on the back deck.
I used plastic buckets (which we already had) and bins (found in the $1 section of the drugstore) to corral our go-to items, such as bubbles, chalk, squirt bottles, and mesh bags for hauling sandy beach toys. A generous sized shelf (intended for a TV, of course) is a perfect spot for storing sports equipment such as tennis racquets, wiffle ball bats, a horseshoe set, kickboards, and scuba gear. On the shelf below are sand toys, buckets, tackle boxes, and the ubiquitous wooden alphabet blocks. The bottom shelf holds our R/C cars and trucks, caution cones (for car races and obstacle courses), stomp rockets (so fun!) and our T-ball tote (which fits a tee, bat, balls, baseball gloves, batting helmet, and DIY bases for a quick grab-and-go on our way to the ball field.)
And for drawing, scribbling, or outdoor list-making (think: scavenger hunts, keeping score, and garden to-dos), I painted the inside doors with green chalkboard paint. This simple, sanity-saving project created a "Command Central" for all of our outdoor adventures. Best of all, at the end of the day, clean up is a breeze! Now we really are happy campers!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I LOVE THIS! What a fabulous idea and a great way to recycle!
Fantastic idea. I love it! Can I come over and play?
This is amazing - I wish I had a big porch to do something like this! I'm constantly forgetting where the bubbles/beach balls/sandtoys got put. Unfortunately, we're on a second floor apartment of a 2 family house, and I don't think my downstairs neighbors would like it on their porch... But I'm going to think about better organization for our hallway!
Okay, strange question, but how do you keep the spiders out? Or do you not worry about that?
Genius!
LOVE this idea. Those big armoires are everywhere now because people are moving to flatscreens.
Great Idea! I have a big armoire sitting in my garage that I couldn't sell... never thought of using it for the kids!
This is really really smart!!! Thinking too that I could use one of these armoirs for a sort of hideaway potting shed...thanks for the inspiration!
This is a fantastic idea. I wish I had a covered porch, but maybe with a little varnish we could pull this off right out in the backyard. Great work!

I love this idea, we live in Idaho and this would really help keep all of our back yard fun items neat, tidy, and out of the elements.
I love this - what a fun, beautiful way to motivate the kids to get outside!
Just one question... I tried to re-purpose a bureau to a detached garage for storage, and um, well the bug thing became a memory I don't like to remember.
How DO you protect a wooden piece like that from, say, a colony of termites or any other host of creepy crawlies?
