Name: James
Location: Capitol Hill, Seattle, Washington
I just recently moved to seattle after working for a few years in New York City. I wanted to bring some of that NYC style and mix it with the more laid back, industrial west coast feel.
The apartment is a rental, but i think that even if you might be moving again, it is worth putting the effort to making it a home. I mixed custom made pieces with vintage finds and catalogue purchases.
My friends and I have dubbed the apartment "The Men's Room" because of the masculine library feel. But the modern accents and varying textures keep the space warm.
Thanks, James!

laid back, stylish and sweet. Love it.
These needs a house tour and please hang your pictures. I'm so over the 'leaning' pictures against the wall.
Love the dark walls.
I like!
Good job! You know you're doing something right if people can only comment about how you hang your pictures and nothing of actual substance!
I hope you drink the Elysian's Men's Room beer there.
James, we definitely need a house tour! Also, I like what you did with your pictures frames in the bedroom. It's a clever look that is a cross between an extended headboard and a window treatment. Everything pictured: Well done! Again, house tour please.
Forgot to ask...what is the bedroom paint color? Thanks.
Love the colors and good balance of light and dark colors. Not too masculine at all, though I'm fond of old libraries in general.
Did you really come from NY? Whereever you moved from, I'm going to assume that it was a place without earthquakes.
Lovely as the pictures are above the bed, you don't want them to fall on your head during "the big one". Think BIG headache and lots of glass shards.
For similar reasons, please don't position the bed directly under the window. Broken glass landing on you as you sleep (or as you duck under the covers and wait for the shaking to end) is not a good decorating option in any west coast home.
Oh I like the black, especially the bedroom.
Very sleek, but I'm afraid the pictures on the bedhead give me the heebie-jeebies too, and I'm not from an earthquake zone.
Love the rug and the blue dino. :D
The frames above the bed freak me OUT! Do you not have sex in that bed!? Does it not jostle about when you get in and out? I'm not anti leaning pictures, but put a shelf to the side of the bed and lean them, on the headboard is just not practical!
Second house tour! Second about being scared to have sex with those leaning pictures on the headboard!
@LADYLISA - The brand is "Do it Best" the color is "Enigma"
The art above the bed are actually secured to a shelf attached the the wall behind the headboard.
well, by all means...if @lyonstill is over the leaning pictures, you had better hang them up, stat. I think the whole place looks great!
I was happy to see this as I also recently moved to Seattle. How did you choose the gray color for the walls? I would love to paint my apartment gray, but am afraid that it will be too depressing during the non-summer months. Thoughts?
I second what Teadragon said. Pictures over the bed are a real no-no pretty much anywhere on the west coast. If you *must* have art above your bed, get a fabric wall hanging and hang it with a cord instead of a heavy rod.
If the bed under the window is the only way your room layout will work, put up heavy fabric drapes or a roman shade and close it every night.
Quarterlifestyle--I suspect the OP might have an issue with the color this winter. If he just moved there recently, he may not have experienced how dark a Seattle winter can be. When I lived in Seattle, I generally went for warmer colors. My first living room was the color of yellow cake batter. I loved it. The room felt sunny even on the gloomiest day. The second living room I had was painted with a colorwashing treatment that ended up looking like aged terra cotta. It didn't feel as sunny as the first living room, but it still felt warm. My bedroom was a pale blue, which also helped make up for the dreary weather.
I am the photographer who took these photos.
James has endured the Seattle winters previous to moving back from NYC, and the apartment has an ample amount of natural light coming through windows. All artificial lighting was off during while taking photos. I'm sure he'll be fine emotionally.
Also, on earthquakes, Seattle only gets minor earthquakes every couple years. Planning your entire living situation around a rarity, or the possibility of THE BIG ONE, sounds like a drastic impact on the regular daily enjoyment of your interior space.
The place is gorgeous, James.
@ANORMAND - I wouldn't worry about the type of color you choose, but the grey that i chose is actually a mix of every color that the manufacturer has so it's extremely rich which will work well in any environment. If you're worried about it I would just stay away from any flat colors.
