- What do you love about your bedroom?:
- I love how cozy it is. It has a definite rustic masculine vibe ... but at the same time, modern elements. Like sleeping in a modern cabin retreat. Of course there can never be enough layers ... pillows, down comforters, or Navajo prints.
- What are your tips for creating a beautiful, healthy and organized bedroom?
- The wood planked wall grounds the bed, makes the headboard feel huge ... it also hides the cords from the industrial sconces on the sides of the bed. We built it in a day with straight-off-the-shelf pine from Home Depot (we used the exact size the planks come in) and stained it a rich Jacobean. To keep the walls "clean" I propped art on easels on top of the dresser, which is really 3 Ikea Malm dressers pushed together. The peg rack wall was the best solution to a lack of closet space, it's attractive and functional. The curtains are almost the same color as the warm khaki walls. I may be a "pillow guy", but I am not a "patterned curtain guy".
- In modern homes, bedrooms have become more than just a place to sleep; they can be a retreat, a home office, a library, a relaxation zone. What are some ways you make the most of your bedroom?
- Dual function is the way most bedrooms are now. My bedroom is also my office. The modern chrome sawhorse desk serves as my nightstand too. Paperwork is kept in a storage box underneath so I don't have to think about work while I'm trying to relax at the end of the day.

I just want to full-on sprint and jump into that bed! I agree, I can't have enough pillows either. I really like to room overall it's very inviting. Well done!
Wow! Very Texas-y... I love the rug.
I'm from Texas. This is a little too literally "TEXAS!" even for me, haha. The bed does look ridiculously comfy, though!
Awesome! Looks like a Ralph Lauren catalog.
I'm not a fan of animal horns, all those pillows or displayed clothing but this works! You've manange to make this entire room comfortable, warm and inviting. You certainly got my vote. I'm from California so maybe I don't know, but I don't see this as too Texas-y. Really like it.
In my imagination, this is what John Wayne's bedroom look like!
Wow! I love the bed and the headboard (including the horns); it looks so inviting!
*looks* like...
All he is missing is a framed copy of the Republic of Texas constitution, really. I have several friends who have rooms very similar to this in Dallas.
This feel pretty campy to me--intentional? The Virgin Mary next to all the cowboy paraphernalia, for instance. Anyway, it's fun for a change.
Really nice. Where are the sconces from?? Love them!
LOVE your wall lamps. Where are they from???
lol...how much time do you spend taking the pillows off every night and then putting them back on in the morning?
LOVE THE WALL! The whole room is loveable, actually. Ps. I thought my husband needed alot of pillows. WOW! :P
And when you take the pillows off of the bed, where do you put them?
Hmmm...did I open a catalog???
Great room, but reminds me of that movie with Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston where his ex had the bed covered in a million pillows, and he was forever packing and unpacking the bed. First thing I would do on entering the room is take a running leap into them. Like this one...
That's definitely a Texas-sized commitment to a look!
I couldn't live there (seriously, where do the 12+ pillows go when you're using the bed?), but I think I'd very much enjoy shopping this room :-)
haha, I thought the room was a store.
It is definitely all american room and different than other rooms I've seen here(in a nice way of course)
This is not my style but it is done well and is inviting. I love the solution for clothes with the pegs. Looks great.
I don't get all the coats and boots -- this is ONE person's room?
This is the first time I want to jump through the computer screen and dive bomb into a bed. Seriously, you just may have changed my mind about having an army of pillows on the bed.
As for where do the pillows go at night, don't they stay on the bed? On the other hand I know a woman who got a tall decorative wire waste basket for her husband to chuck the extra pillows to when they need the bed.
Ok, can you rent out your room please? This is EXACTLY the kind of place I want to stay when I visit Texas! Wow.
i'm voting for this, even though it's not to my taste at all, because at least it's more than "i made the bed." seriously, these bedroom entries have been so uninspiring and bland and unimaginative. "white room, white sheets, matching side tables, matching lamp, maybe a piece of art over the bed. good enough." so lazy.
This took time, thought, and imagination. I especially like the clothes storage and wood wall.
Over the top baby! I giggled because there is no room on the bed for sleeping. Congratulations James - you have now joined the ranks of folks (previously 100% women) addicted to bed pillow.
This looks like an excellent audition for a retail stylist position.
pillows - obviously.
Not my style but it is well executed and thoughtful and personal.
My bias: Way over the top masculine for me. I grew up with animal parts covering the walls of my family home and still have nightmares about it. Bad feng shui. Instead of jumping in the pillows, I'd jump out the door if a prospective boyfriend brought me here.
It feels very cozy and rustic. I would agree with the comments about the pillows, it looks great but where do you put them? Then again I'm not a pillow girl. I would agree with the other commenter about the other lack luster entries lately. I'm not sure what they're entered for so this one gets my vote as well. It's nice to see a well done bedroom even if it's not my thing.
Wow!
I've never been to Dallas (the airport doesn't count!) but I imagine this might all be a bit much in the Texas summertime. I presume this bedroom is in snuggly winter mode?
Too many pillows. What do you do with them every evening? This looks like an entry for that famous (infamous) web site that harangues about noguchi tables, etc.
Imagine pillow fights in this room, so much ammunition! I like the pillows, but I have to remind myself to pick them up off the floor (ugh) and put them back on my bed (double ugh) in the morning. The look however is decidedly rustic and masculine.
I did not think that I was going to like this room, but I did. Well done.
Just grab the bull by the horns and run with it
Being female, its not my style, but I love it. Not crazy about all the pillows, but I would imagine you put them on the floor when you go to bed. Dont like the horns over the bed but love the wooden wall. Lovely storage and display of clothes, and why should he not have lots of clothes. Why not? I agree with the other posters, at least this is not generic bland. Its different, very cowboy. Well done James.
Love the wooden wall. Sorry dude, but that's the only thing I love. Too much of...everything?
love it all.
seriously.
you boys rock!
I absolutely adore this! If you ever have any room for me and my husband, we'll be on the first plane. I am s pillow lover too, we pile ours into a chair every night... takes 5 minutes and we're done. Kind of amazed by the wonderment of others about where you out them, lol :)
Where do you sleep?
I LOVE this bedroom. Every other bedroom except one or two were "blah," to me. Every one of those other bedrooms had nothing but store-bought this, clichéd that. Yours, however, is a really cool blend of lots of styles and (yes) clichés, but it's so well done that it doesn't matter. How are you not on TV yet? Seriously, you're like the male Martha Stewart.
Nothing masculine about all those pillows. Over the top, yes. Much better BR's were submitted Fri.
This is awesome! So much attention to detail! It is nice to see layers and warmth compared to the starkness of others. Thank you and well done!
This bedroom is everything I am not but I love it so much! So masculine, so cozy, and totally livable. I'd definitely sip coffee in that bed, and I don't even drink coffee.
My fav room so far out of the competition.
Love the style and personality of this bedroom! Obviously the home of collectors with a keen eye. It's great that it reflects the owners and their interests.
i just can't... with this room. i will say this though--my husband and i, in our last home, did not have a closet in our otherwise huge bedroom. We didn't have the money to install an enclosed closet system and so instead our clothes had to be displayed. it's a tough look to pull off in my opinion. i would have never considered it doing this way, with hooks. but its an interesting approach.
Why being female it's not your style. You are definitely not from Texas. ha ha :)
One of my favorite rooms of all times! ...and I have seen a bunch AND I'm from Texas. :)
I so love this room, even the pillows, although I don't think I would have quite so many on our bed. The attention to detail is just wonderful and you know there is a great story behind every eclectic piece. So inspiring! I have to admit to copying just a little bit, but with a boho, Moroccan twist. I stalk their blog obsessively... James, you will always have my vote!
OK, Let's see, questions to answer....
The sconces are from Restoration Hardware, we just hung them upside down. Clever, I know.
James & Jamie living here if that explains all the coats, (small closets, and no shame in owning a few jackets and boots.)
The big pillows spend most of thier lives piled in the corner, they come out for blog photo shoots. :) Sheeesh
We LOVE this room, and we're glad that y'all do too.
I think this is nice except for the wall of clothing with a sign hung above it like it's a boutique. So much visual clutter there, I don't think I'd find it very restful. Does your bed not have room for under-bed storage? Or maybe it's time to pass on some of your underused things to someone in need? :D
I live in Texas too and I've seen a lot of BAD western, so it's nice to see something that's a little more modern eclectic western. It's not my style, but it looks good and way different from the usual boring or ultra modern man's bedroom. I actually like the cool boutique look with the sign and clothes, although it would drive me crazy to live with. Hook 'em horns.
You get my vote, James and Jamie! I need to buy more pillows...
needs more pillows #morecowbell
You boys are the best! My favorite by far -- and ALL those damn pillows better be on the bed and photo-shoot ready when I come for a visit!
Dave, the pillows are always on the bed and photo ready when people visit ....
So American..! Like it..!
amazing, creative and different! winner :)
love it, but the pillows are just ridiculous. It looks like a Bed Bath and Beyond threw up on the bed. The rest of it is slightly campy, kind of fun, and masculine at the same time. Edit the pillows. Srsly.
I wonder what country this entry is from? haha. Seriously, that bed looks really comfy!
That is a great looking room, but seriously, what is with all the pillows! That would make me crazy having to put them on and take them off every day!

Quite a theme you've got going on! I'm wowed by the Texas energy. It's remarkable. I grew up in Dallas, and this room reminds me of Weir's on Knox. It's probably a piano bar or Cheesecake Factory now, but Weir's used to carry very "Texasy" (sp?!) type furniture for the discerning Dallasite.
So bold. I just had to Favorite you. Your clothing installation is really striking.
Amy, Weir's is still there!!!! I haven't been in there in a decade, but you are right ...they did pile the beds high with pillows and paterns and crap.
Remember the candy counter in the back...and all the Christian literature? That little drug store with the lunch counter is still there too.
Only in Highland Park...am I right?

This is so over the top I'm loving it and laughing at it at the same time. So "masculine" it's absolutely oozing camp. Ride em cowboy!
