- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love the location. I'm in the basement and at the back of my apartment building which allows for an outdoor patio space and a cool place during the hot summer months. I love my apartment's layout. Many small spaces are so chopped up which actually makes a space seem smaller. After a two and half month search, I found this apartment in a neighborhood that I desired. I work long weird hours and I just wanted to create a space that was warm, masculine, and comfortable to come home home. I am on a tight budget and I love that 90% of my furniture and accessories are from flea markets, tag sales, dumpster dives, and thrift stores.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The biggest challenge living in a small space is lack of storage. So I have had to make sure that most things do double duty and edit. If I buy someting new then something has to leave, so I must decide if the impulse buy is really worth an item leaving my space. My other big challenge was living in a small basement space. So my ceilings are much lower, very little natural light, and feeling a little cave-like. The white tiled floors helps brighten up the space. I have painted some walls in a dark color to help trick the eye into added space and the dark colors help warm my apartment. Finally, I created a flow from the front door and through the apartment, which makes the space seem larger than its actual 450 sq. feet.

Well done. I'd live here.
Oooh long and thin. Tricky. You really made it work though, well done!
Doesn't look like a budget job to me - very cohesive and classy.
Very personal space-- I love it! I'm very jealous of your patio. The stucco/texturing on the outer wall is very cool.
Nice. Cool chairs in the dining area. Are they comfy?
I absolutely love the rectangular tree picture above the bed!! Jealousy to the max.
cool space. Is that a rug on your bed? (I'm sure AT will find a way to make that negative). Good job.
Wow, this is my favorite one yet. Definitely getting my vote.
I love this place! Even all the dark & moody colors...doesn't make it feel small, just cozy.
I love that silver floor mirror with the wide frame and the red painted animal head above it (I'm just hoping it is just paper mache and not a real animal head) and the narrow storage credenza in the hallway. I like how they were not afraid to use some large scale pieces in such a small (narrow) space. Wish we could see the kitchen and bathroom...
I don't think I could live so subterranean a life, but you've done a great job and I agree that it doesn't look low budget at all, it looks very rich and luxurious.
Job well done.
i'm in love! its so funky & hip! the art is awesome! i want! it doesn't like bargins and flea market finds. it's gorgeous!!
sorry...doesn't look like a bargin. =)
@OwlgirlO - I was also wondering if that was a rug, specifically the gray Remy rug from Crate + Barrel (or as a saleswoman once corrected... "It's SHALE, not gray.") I have the green version and it looks like just like it.
Jamie, you certainly have an eye for design and proportion. I appreciate how you were mindful of what your space had to offer you -- great choices, good mood lighting. It is (stereotypically) masculine-chic, and I believe this is what you wanted, right? I do believe the stuff came from flea markets or were hand-me-downs...it doesn't matter if the composition is right, and you made it coherent. Your cave is full of personality, I'm voting for you!
love it! wished I had such a cool space.
Love what you did with such impossible 'narrowed' lay out, very classy and personal.... excellent furniture for the patio!
Love your art collection.
Didn't anyone else notice the di_do sitting on the table in picture 1?
Now that is how you do thrifting right! What a great space. And so much awesome art to look at, too.
This is my favorite! I absolutely love this apartment. The color combination, furnitures, and art collection all are designed and arranged very tastefully. You have done wonderful with such a small space. You obviously have an eye for design. Great job!
Awesome job- kudos!
I'm so impressed you had the guts to paint a basement apartment a dark color, and your other choices give maximum visual impact to a very limited space.
Nice editing without looking contrived or staged.
you have my vote
Very cool! I love the colors and love the art. Really am fond of the license plate art.
classy!
house tour please...want to see kitchen and bathroom!!!
Beautiful job!
The hand chairs are freaky and yet hilarious -- just like on Arrested Development!
love the large art of the of the ladies head. very classy. you've goy my vote!!
Jamie, I love your apartment!! I think you need to be an interior designer!! Please design my space. I have more space and no art!! You have my vote!!!
Its not di_do. Its actually a Chinese (jade) fertility sculpture purchased at the Hell"s Kitchen flea market here in NYC.
Yes, the grey (shale) rug, used as a textural throw at the foot of the bed, is from create and barrel. It was heavily discounted (75% off) because of a slight defect.
Thank you, everyone, for your support and great comments.
Simply fab! I love it!
I think you did a fantastic job of dealing with a narrow and somewhat light-deprived space. Your patio is wonderful too - I bet you enjoy it!
Love the space!
I love the artwork too! I did some digging; you can find the artwork @ jamiebondart site.
Awesome patio chairs. Love the art work in the living room.
AMAZING! Fabulous job!
Really love the chairs and couch arrangement in the living room--does the dark-colored table in between fold out?
No, the coffee table does not fold out...... but can see why you would ask. The coffee table is actually two tables combined. The space was too small for the two tables so i combined them to make one to fit the small space.
Also.........the coffee table was purchased at the Chelsea flea markets. FYI
Thanks for the wonderful comments regarding the patio "hand" chairs. I found them on Craigslist really cheap. FYI
Can you tell us about the bed headboard--is that a painting? Silkscreen? Very cool!
The art above the bed is actually my best thrift store find, only $2. It looks as if it is silk screened onto a compressed paper board? The frame is wood and is original to the piece. Thanks for asking.
Love it! You are so talented!
Such a fascinating space.
The red rams head above the large mirror is actually made from molded plastic....so no aminals were actually harmed. lol. FYI, found it at TJ MAXX for less than $5. It was white when purchased.
Yes, the dining chairs are very comfortable. They were purchased from craigslist for very little money. I brought them home and cleaned them with "soft scrub" cleanser and they looked new. Very easy to keep clean as they are made of fiber glass.
love your outdoor space! this place does not look like it was put together on a tight budget. Congrats and well done!
