- Inspiration for my palette:
- A comic-strip styled portrait which a very talented artist friend of mine painted of me. He used all of the bright colours above and it struck me how warm and rich they were and now it hangs proudly on the wall of this room. I even had an original Louis 16th sofa recovered in a lime green velvet and Tomato red geometric patterned heavy cotton material. I just LOVE this room. It works so well.
- Colors used in my room
- I used mainly tomato red, lime green and turquoise with a bit of gold and yellow thrown in..oh and black...always black.
- Tips for using color successfully
- If you're using lots of colour for an eclectic look then stick with either bold primary colours or pastels but never combine the two. I anchor all of my coloured rooms with black and or white. I always have a black and white rug or black cushions, lampshade, picture frames etc which seem to punctuate the design.

Love it!
Love it too!!
Oh my this is spectacular. I am an entry in the light category and if I could paint this would be my inspiration, so you get my vote and yours is the best, most unique and fun entry so far. Love it, love it and wait did I say I love this?! Cause I do!
Oh and you had me at the couch!
Spectacular! I love everything in your room, the colours, the pieces, the window with the beautiful screen..... Thanks for sharing!
This is amazing. I'd like a house tour.
Lovely, lovely room. Your color sense and decor balance is so well defined. And where-o-where did you get the white fretwork room divider/screen?
I want to marry that couch.
Love, love, love.
Before I read your description I immediately thought 'rich'. Love this!
Glorious! Never would I pack so much intensity in a space. I need a friend like yours to nudge me out of my comfort zone. This is truly STUNNING.
You've got a nerve! My absolute favourite thus far. It would be marvelous to see the rest of this place.
(What is the name and maker of the patterned fabric on the sofa?)
Thank you! I'm so happy you like it and thanks for commenting too :)
Thank you Despina! :)
What a lovely thing to say! Thank you so much. Good luck in the competition! :)
The couch is an original 18th Century Chaise from France. I bought it in a very bad state indeed..it had mice living in it and the fruit-wood frame was broken in lots of places, in fact it was hanging together by a few threads of the upholstery. I had it restored and decided to re-upholster it with these wacky colors to give it a new lease of 21st Century life! I'm so happy you love it too...the bright colors and contrasting fabrics were a real gamble :)
Thank you so much! This room was originally white and minimal and I wanted to splash out and get out of my 'play-safe neutrals' comfort zone. It was a liberating experience to be a little wild and it's inspired me to be more experimental and fearless in other areas of my home :)
Thank you Mary Poppins...you can fly down on your umbrella any time you like! :)
What a fabulous compliment, thank you! I found a company (in the UK where I live) who make laser-cut MDF fretwork and sent them my design and measurements. Hey-ho a few weeks later it arrived et voila, a beautiful screen which provides privacy during the day (the window is floor to ceiling) and yet allows plenty of light through. :)
I'm so happy you like it...it's at least 200 years old but I recently saved it from a sorry state and had it re-built and re-upholstered :)
Thank you!! :)
Thank you so much Minooka :)
Thank you! :) Never be afraid to experiment! I subscribed to a safe neutral look for too long (although I still love this style) and this free-fall dive into bold colors and mis-matched era's of furniture was a truly liberating and inspiring experience for me :)
Hello LollyPup! Thank you for your comment. I'd love to show you the rest of my house! How would I do that? I cannot remember for sure but I THINK the name of the fabric designer is ROMO. I shall rummage through my files and let you know if it's any different
Love not only the colours but the eclectic mix of old and new combined with the quirky bits.
Thank you so much Diane :)
I too love love love this and would love love love to see the rest of your place, please somebody tell Katerina how to get house toured!
Thank you so much!! Yes somebody please tell me! :)
beautiful
Thank you Claravox! ;)
A Mediterranean ocean of plums comes to mind...a genius of colour and design!
It is absolutely beautiful! Hope you win! :)
Thanks for your support guys!! :)
Jane ~ i love all your combos of patterns mixed with the lush colors...you did it again, girl!! Beautiful!! xxoo
I do love it, the rich combination of colors and also that great portrait on the wall. Who might that be? A wonderful room...very rich looking...
Fabulous look.
Gosh, thanks guys!! I really appreciate your comments. Thank you! xx
Absolutely beautiful! Can I hire you to travel to the U.S. to help me with my home? ;)
Zia YES!! And thank you so much, I'm happy you like it. I would LOVE to come to the U.S. I love America and the nicest people I have ever met are all American! :)
This is one gorgeous room. I would definitely love to see the house tour.
So this is maybe the exact opposite of my own style, and it's beautiful! I love this, because if someone described this room to me, I'd swear I'd hate it. But this totally lovely. Really great job!
It's funny Aus4418 because my style was completely the opposite from this too until recently. This room was very minimal and neutral with grey walls and white sofas. I wish I could show you a picture of how it was.
I'm overwhelmed with such lovely comments, thank you! :)
Nice ,nice,nice.kisses from greece
It's rooms like this that make me wonder why in the WORLD I have sepia tan walls and lots of dark brown furniture! LOL ...
Seriously, these photos are fabulous! ... with the only downside being that I now want to throw most of my furniture on a funeral pyre.
Some of us make do with "pops of color" (as HGTV has endlessly drilled into our vocabulary) -- but some folks luxuriate in EXPLOSIONS of color! :)
Good job!
Thank you MelissaM! it certainly cheers me up on a dull day! :) Oh and as for having a lot of dark brown furniture...well, I had a lot of it too and guess what?! I PAINTED it!! :) Give it a go, don't throw it out!! :)
I love it. It's rich and warm and has a real luxury feel about it, while avoiding that fake
"display room" sense you can get out of a lot of designed interiors. I can so imagine living happily in that room. Brilliant use of colour and texture. I just want to lay my face against the velvet couch.
EarthlayDelights, you are welcome to come and rest your cheek against my sofa anytime!! :) Thank you for your lovely comment :) xx
Super Cool! :P
Simply amazing. I'd like to see the rest of this house. Love the James Bond Bloefeld chair!!
Too much for me...but I tell you what- I love it in your home!
Utterly sublime
OMG...I bow to you! :) I am sitting here going thru the entries wondering what colors *safe* colors will go with my Red Vintage couch...then I come to you and now I am thinking what colors do I love...forget the go with!!! Wonderful!!!
my absolutely FAVOURITE entry in the entire competition this year! this room is truly what COLOUR is all about!!!! :-)
I already loved this room because of your irreverent pattern mixing and fun colors, and then I saw you have the same framed insect print I do! You have very good taste :-)
Your vintage red couch sounds amazing! I'm so happy to have changed you from a 'safe' option! Thank you for your comment :)
Gosh thank you SO much!! You've made me smile and feel very happy. Sooooo pleased you like it!!
hi, I am Katerina's daughter and I have to say I am SOooooo proud of my mum. I wish you could see my bedroom she decorated too! She's ill at the moment and so I am replying on her behalf . Oh and it was me who bought her the butterfly print for a birthday present! :D
Beautiful use of a bright and vibrant palette and some adorably quirky pieces!
my two cents.....best of luck KJ !!!
Jane, your family room is amazing! I LOVE how you've made it truly you by creating & restoring key elements. Way to love yourself & your family! That sofa alone is a seasoned miracle (200 year legacy!!!) ... then, you added even more chemistry with the cushions & afghan ... stunning! Oh & don't get me started on that beautiful golden chair with the flag cushion ... you would have to peeeeeel me out of that chair daily! No wonder you have a spotlight on it! ;-)
Jane, I forgot to mention ... I pray that you feel better (so sweet of your daughter to chime in for you). Thanks so much for this precious glimpse of your home. With all the votes you've received, Apartment Therapy might request a house tour (I don't know how that works).
Thank you for your kind comments! :) I'm feeling much better today. The golden chair is an original 60's Blofeld chair and it is SO comfortable! In fact it was originally marketed as 'the most comfortable chair in the world' and it really is! :)
CONGRATULATIONS! I wish you were eligible compete with all the finalist. I definitely think yours was the best example of color use. Hats off to ya!!!!!!!!!
You are very kind Charisse, thank you :) xx
Congrats! What a beautiful room!
Thank you Tracy! :)
Oh my gosh! This is amazing. The colors draw you in. I want to live in this room!!
After seeing this room, I really wish international entries could be included in the final round for the prizing. Your space is absolutely beautiful. You really have wonderful taste combined with great imagination - an unbeatable combination! Beautiful work :)
My living room was entered in the International Division so I have followed the contest closely this year. Is it always so controversial?
First of all, congratualtions to all the finalists. I voted for a couple, but not all of them and, while they are beautiful rooms, none were my first choice in their category. I did not personally expect to win and was thrilled just to be included in the competition. I felt that there were rooms superior to mine but it was still fun to watch the votes and read the comments.
AT's motives for allowing voting are obvious and I happen to agree with them. It's fun and encourages many people (who are mainly observers) to become engaged and post comments and generally interact with this community. It is also a brilliant way to draw in more readers.
Obviously the Bloggers have an edge but they were well within the rules to advertise on their blogs and wouldn't we all do that if we could? Perhaps if this is a really issue for many readers (and it seems to have hurt some feelings and ruffled some feathers) AT will consider a panel of designer or "expert" judges in the future, while still allowing reader voting and prizes for "Reader's Picks"... Win-win?
Congratulations! Well deserved.
I have to say that the international entries were my favourites this year. Almost every time I saw an entry that really caught my eye, it ended up being an international one. This says a lot about the calibre of entries in this division, and about the winning entry. It was a tough race!
Congrads you are the winner in my book too. the color choices and tips are well received by me. Also. You took upcycling to a new level with the sofa. I'd do the same...don't think I"ll find anything around my neck of the woods that old. My eyes grabbed the wood storage, which I will put into place. I'll be looking for the home tour. They do ask folks if they would be willing for a tour ....to contact them.
HOUSE TOUR SUBMISSION FORM request needed for a home tour. Congrads again !
Loved your room! One of the best in the contest! Congratulations!
Thank you very much! :)
I'd love to be included in a House Tour and will certainly look into applying! Thank you so much :)
Thank you Tammy!! :)
Which was your room Taylor de Sa? I was not aware about any controversy or about any feathers being ruffled. It was a fun contest and I have really enjoyed and been inspired by many of the entrants. Thank you for all the lovely comments :)
Wow Lily what a fabulous accolade! Thank you so much!! :)
Jane, congratulations!!! I have to admit ... I'm feeling some victory over here knowing that I loved your room enough to favorite it. Officially celebrating with you! :-)
Thank you so much!! I am thrilled :) And thanks again for all of your lovely comments :)
Katerina, the post or posts (I can't recall whether they both posted here as well as on the US finaists' walls) I wrote in response to was or were deleted. If you read the walls of the other finalists, you'll notice what I mean.
I'm not thrilled with AT for deleting posts and leaving others that now look out of context. :S
Anyway, congratulations again! I do happen to love your colour scheme!
Spectacular....note how conservative and uninspiring all the US finalists are in comparison. I'm so glad there is an international category. I'd love a house tour as well.
Thank you Jane! (Great name by the way) ;)
I'm going to apply to have a house tour featured but you may be disappointed...the rest of my house is quite neutral :)
Congratulations Jane, and you had some amazing competition in your International category, too. I know there is some controversy about the US entrants and winners, but the International seems to have avoided that. I do think it was really noticeable this year that the International category was where most of my favourites were, and I know I'm not alone.
Thank you Stationeryfiend, I'm thrilled I really am. yes there was some stiff competition from all quarters and I must say that my favourite U.S. entries didn't make the finals. There were many worthy winners in all categories. I didn't notice any controversy. It's a shame when that happens.
Jane, when you posted that lovely comment on my entry I didn't realize it was you! (I apologize for calling you Katerina). I absolutely love your room and am so pleased that you won. Of course I voted for you. You must let me know when you get your blog up and running.
Thanks Suzanne I most certainly will. It's all looking a bit complicated to me at the moment but i'm sure I'll get the hang of it :)
