Jane of All the Luck in the World was kind enough to let us share her unique Christmas tree alternative, composed of "useless but pretty objects" she had collected over the years and arranged into something that is one part art and one part decor. Check out a close up of all the items that make up Jane's festive wall adornment below...

Think of this as the more crafty version of those Christmas Tree wall decals or the Post-It tree. We love the mix of typographic and found objects elements that altogether make for one graphical and dimensional display.

Shaw's Original Fir...
I LOVE IT! How long did it take you to put this all together Miss crafty-pants Jane?
This is awesome. I can't imagine how long this took. Not to mention what her wall will look like afterward.
I love it! But now does she have a million little holes in her wall?
And I think a house tour is definitely called for.
Good lord that chair is ugly...
So creative! How were all of the items attached to the wall (and will it damage the wall after being taken down)?
Adorable!
Incredibly cool. I can't imagine how long it would take (or how many do-overs it would take me) to finish.
Yes, house tour please!
This is great! I bet it would be good on a piece of primed canvas. That way you could reuse it every year without having to redo it or put holes in the wall! Very inventive.
WHOA i think you got that pillow from my Yard sale?!
this is some kind of wonderful! details, please--how long did it take to create and how are the objects attached to the wall?
That insanely groovy!!
I think this is my favorite of the alternative Christmas trees that have been posted. Very nice.
Very creative and attractive! Thanks!
This is uber cool. I'll bet she used sticky tack.
that is so awesome
I love this, and I hate cute 'n' crafty, but this is darling. It would make a great fabric or wrapping paper design, too.
What kind of glue/adhesive did you use? I hope you didn't use nails because I just can't imagine all the holes on the wall after you bring the stuff down...
Anyway, it's lovely!
I wish I could do that will my useless-and-ugly-objects.
Third vote for a house tour! Love the color palette.
Wonderful!
Darling. It reminds me of those old 'I Spy' books.
Don't worry friends, we're working on a house tour for '09!
That is beautiful! Please let us all know how you stuck em! P.S. I like that chair..a lot!
That is absolutely the best!!!
Love it! Sadly, I think much of the cool effect comes from it being right on the wall -- so all those little pin holes will ultimately have to be patched. But maybe it's worth it! (Then again, switchout the Christmas specific parts and modify the shape a bit, and it could live year round...)
I used to have a collection of those sun faces ("Sol's") that were mostly jewelry. I attached them in a cloud on a bathroom wall, post earrings stuck directly into the wallboard, straight pins supporting th pendants and pins... I really liked that grouping, too...
I love that chair. Where did it come from?
i love her colors and sensibilities, too.
did a little digging and found photos of jane's place:
http://www.hiddeninfrance.typepad.com/hidden_in_france/2008/02/jane-schoutens.html.
she re-upholstered the chair. it's available for purchase on her site: http://www.alltheluckintheworld.nl/en/producten.php?actie=1&dir=images/producten/images/at-thumb
and she gives instructions on how to make it at: http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/04/diy-project-janes-patchwork-chair.html#more-9450
I'm curious why are people obsessed with the holes? what's the big deal about patching them? does that really have an impact on whether or not you like this as a piece? Are these the same thoughts you have when you see such an installation at a gallery? This could be an interesting psychological study.
i absolutely love this!
This is one of the best posts ever! LOVE! The text and the objects are so dear without being cutesy, so stylish and alive! the best!
Totally fab ... the chair, too.
We want more!
Thank you all!
I attached everything with lots of tiny nails and Blue Tack.
It only took an afternoon to do and I didn't even have everything together before starting. I just kept adding things as I found them in old boxes and tins all around the house!
The wall will probably be a disaster when I take it down but nothing a bit of plaster and some paint can't fix!
Oh, how I love your Christmas tree! What a wonderfully creative way of decorating it. Well done you!
One of my favorite things about this is that the "tree" isn't just a triangle, but it's the shape that trees are. I really like this a majorly huge lot.
I love it!
Just flat out adorable, all of it! The tree, and most especially that fab chair!
Awesome! and what a great way to hide a thermostat! :)
That is very charming!
This gives me hope that all of the pretty/random/"useless" things I have could come together in a similar way. Thanks for the inspiration!
This is GREAT!
gorgeous. :-D
Very creative, but seems that she will leave holes in the wall and have to repaint. An artificial tree (perhaps a small one in white) would have been a better idea me thinks. All those things would have looked great on a white tree!
Well, I know what I'm going to try this weekend! I love that for everyone who tries this, no two will be remotely similar.
STILL love that chair!
She sells Christmas cards with photos of the tree... great way to make it last!! http://www.alltheluckintheworld.nl/en/product.php?id=769&page=1&dir=
