Less Choice. Just in time for the busiest painting season of the year, we just heard today that Janovic, now Benjamin Moore, has taken Ralph Lauren Paints and Pratt and Lambert off the shelves! That's it. No more. It's "exclusively Benjamin Moore" from now on (to quote one of the folks at the store on the phone right now).

Much as we admire Warren Buffet (owner of BM and Janovic), all of this has to do with the growing consolidation within the paint market. We blogged the before: What's Up With Janovic/Plaza?, but had no idea that the new owners of Janovic would be so stupid as to remove REALLY GOOD PRODUCTS from their shelves, all in the interest of selling more of their own paint.

While Ralph Lauren paint is not the best quality, its colors are awesome and the paint quality has improved.

We also heard that Benjamin Moore's paints are NO LONGER LATEX. Mark Chamberlain, who uses them every day, says they are now ACRYLIC based in order to make them tougher, but this makes it harder to paint and often makes the surface less smooth.

They apparently did this because Consumer Reports rated their paint below that of Behr on the "toughness" scale. Not caring much for "finish", Ben Moore changed their recipe to compete, losing the faith of good painters everywhere.

What's next?

To find Raph Lauren paints go to Home Depot.
