Name: Jarrett Mason - Music Supervisor at TBWA\Media Arts Lab
Location: Echo Park - Los Angeles, California
Size: 550 square feet, one bed one bath
Years lived in: 8 months
We're so excited that Jarrett has opened up his house to us again (his place was recently in the Small Cool contest). He lives in a duplex owned by an architect, so even though his home is small, the floor plan is carefully laid out and packed with modern elements. Keep reading to see more of Jarrett's place and a video of him grooving to his records (yes really)!

One of my favorite elements in Jarrett's home is the Edison style ceiling lights. Some of his friends are not too keen on the lights, saying it looks like a circus, but I say "the circus effect" is pretty darn cool! The lights carry through the house into every room except the bedroom and bathroom.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Modern, minimal and colorful.
Inspiration: Overall I love the functionality of smaller spaces, so I'm inspired by great design that serves a purpose. California Mid-century Modernism does this best. Pop art is also a big inspiration.
Favorite Element: The Edison light bulbs on the ceiling and the large skewed white box separating the living area and kitchen are probably my favorite physical features of the apartment. In terms of decorating I'm proud of the collection of artwork. I've always thought owning art shouldn't cost a lot of money. Many of the pieces in the apartment are inexpensive posters in custom frames, but each has a great memory associated with it. Like the Basquiat poster in the hallway was from a visit to the Pompidou in Paris; the poster in the kitchen is from the Bauhaus museum in Berlin.
I've also collected a few original pieces by emerging artists — the black buddha baby painting in the bedroom is by a Thai artist; I bought it in a flea market in Bangkok. The Liberation Beats piece is by Guinean/Senegalese artist Aly Kourouma (DJ Ndebele) who lives here in L.A. The sketch by the front door is of my father, drawn by a friend of his in the 70s.
Biggest Challenge: I think when New Yorkers move to Los Angeles we totally go crazy with having space. After four years on the West Coast I had acquired a lot of "stuff," just because I could. So the challenge definitely has been downsizing to 550 square feet with one closet. But it's been great practice in owning only what I need; everything has to have a function. It doesn't matter if it's from DWR or Ikea as long as it's offering some kind of space solution.
What Friends Say: People often comment that the apartment is very neat and uncluttered. I'm drawn to furniture made of light weight materials that can be easily moved — probably a side effect of moving 15 times in 20 years. I've also been a music collector since the age of 14, so I'm used to having vinyl records and CD's literally taking over the places I live. Thanks to technology, I'm very happy not to move a room full of records all over the country. I'm not super old-school in that way — give me a terabyte hard drive and save me the back pain.
Biggest Embarrassment: It's not hard to tell I'm a fan of the Eames/Herman Miller aesthetic. When I had the space it was easier to mix and match design styles and spread out the Mid-Century pieces into different rooms. Living here, I'm a bit self-conscious the apartment is kind of an Eames explosion! I promise I like other styles too.
Proudest DIY: The sheer curtain wall. WIth the help of a friend I measured and bought the sheer fabric downtown and had a seamstress cut it into two panels. It took a couple of tries to make sure the bottom hem that would run along the floor was straight. A hospital track acts as the base on the ceiling. The roller clips (painted white) are from Ikea.
Biggest Indulgence: The sound system in every room. I always have music going — while cooking in the kitchen, relaxing in the living room, folding laundry in the bedroom or even taking a shower. I realize it's overkill to have speakers in every room of such a small apartment, but this way I don't have to inch the volume up and disturb my neighbor (also my landlord). I can play music wirelessly (with two Apple airports) throughout the apartment in different zones, all controlled by my laptop, iPhone or iPad.
Best Advice:
Received: A friend turned me on to the genius of lighting dimmers.
Given: Find a good, cheap art framer.
Dream Sources: If I could drop a lot of cash I'd do it at a store called Desiron on Wooster Street in NY. Mash Studios here in L.A. also makes awesome stuff. Lastly there's a designer out of Alexandria, VA, Daniel Donnelly, amazing stuff.

White Enamel Flatwa...
While Jarrett himself acknowledges the "Eames explosion" I have to say there is such an elegant touch that everything really works for me. I am mad for the built-ins and cabinetry in the kitchen. The color and layout are so calming and inviting... this looks like a place to be, not just a place to look at.
Also the art. That baby Buddha over the bed is INSANE! I love it so much, I don't know what to do.
Wow ! Very nice on the outside, very nice on the inside ! Love all of the artwork, the saint candle, the kitchen cabinetry and just the entire place !!!!
nothing wrong with your Eames Explosion --If I had it, I'd flaunt it, & fully enjoy it too.
Ok, I admit that I've been up almost all night so either I'm seeing things or that is an Obama prayer candle?? I HAVE to know where to buy one of those. I didnt see it noted in the sources.
And the Keith Haring? LOVE IT.
What a great space, Jarrett - Thanks for sharing it with us.
One of the few tours that I like EVERYTHING about. My favorite is the painting over the bed...I remember that on the small cool contest.
Mr. Mason's smile can probably light up his entire space.
Nicely done indeed.
Oh, My nephew in law would be envious of that 'entertainment' set up. Perfect spot.
I love it..the artwork, furniture pieces, everything speaks for itself... All my dream pieces are in one place...:-)
I second the comment about Jarrett's great smile, and I love what he's done with his space.
I do have a question. Are there two turntables? If so, why?
This may be my favorite house tour of all times. Concise and polished, it's just perfect.
Nice nice place great art and wonderful to see the shout out to yu interiors
Awesome. All house tours should have an intro video. Jarrett seems like a cool laid-back guy and his apartment reflects this vibe. I love the bedside lamp and the Obama botanica candle (!).
What a nice space. It feels calm and welcoming.
Love the candle.
Love it too. The burst of orange is enlivening. The artwork over the bed and that Obama prayer candle. Sources please. Then the descriptions and words highlighten in orange. Never noticed that before!
Also, because of the pops of color-- I hardly notice that this is basically a white apartment!
Wow, I love everything about this space. The painting above the bed is killer!
Manages to execute modern without seeming antiseptic at all! Or like a paean to mid-century modern. Love this is a charming and cozy space, and Jarrett seems like the type of guy that you'd be lucky to call a friend.
Really great artwork, too.
May I know the source of the art in the bedroom. Thanks.
One of my favorite tours to date. It's modern, but accessible and laid back. The Edison lights throughout are a truly unique element and that baby Buddha painting is wonderful!
@Kathryn1123: There are two turntables so he can DJ with them. Fantastic space!!!
Wow... so cozy and personal. So many AT tours seem like an impersonal amalgamation of mid-century modern that do not reflect anything of individual taste. The reiteration of this hipster aesthetic becomes blander over time like a rubber stamp used so often it has become pale and faded. It's a great surprise when AT showcases a place like this one, so full of authentic reflections of its inhabitants.
I too really like the "Edison style ceiling lights", never seen anything like it before. Personally can't stand canned recessed lights which gives me mental hives, but these Edison lights seems uber cool! Will pinterest that those lights.
Love it, love it, love it! When can I move in, Jarrett? It appears that everything has been carefully thought out with an eye towards comfort without clutter. The outdoor space and nice parking niche must also make your space feel larger. Kudos to your architect landlord as well for the clean streamlined space.
And last, but not least, I'm so happy to see Black people on Apartment Therapy. Woo-hoo!
People asking where he got the bedroom artwork should read the article.
"I've also collected a few original pieces by emerging artists — the black buddha baby painting in the bedroom is by a Thai artist; I bought it in a flea market in Bangkok."
Great tour, and love the Obama candle :)
Sweet! Definitely one of my favorite AT tours. Ditto what @SMILEANDRELAX & @MIMIKOTA wrote.
The ceiling lighting is phenomenal!
Simply gorgeous! Jarrett-- given your location i'm assuming you go to Jose at DT Framing Outlet. He's the best.
so in love with your place, your art and your music collection!!!
and what smarteralec said...."That baby Buddha over the bed is INSANE! I love it so much, I don't know what to do."
well done...great style
I like the Eames explosion; the MCM style fits the space. Plus who doesn't love a Eames lounge chair? I also feel your pain about moving so many times, 15 times is crazy. Hopefully you get to enjoy this place a longer while. This is one of the most enjoyable house tours.
Where is Jarrett's patio set from (table and benches)?
Sexy
Your artwork is incredible. The piece over the bed and the poster in the entry... Impeccable taste.
Ooh! I love the ceiling lights! They do not look like a circus to me.Also like the small table (with the magazines) in the bedroom.Nice place, really clean and uncluttered.
Or whatever room the table is in... ?
The best tour in a long long time. The art work is fabulous as is that Obama candle.
So nice. Thank you for sharing.
let's get married.
I LOVE the space and Jarrett is a cutie! Do you have a good, cheap art framer in the area you'd recommend?
Flipping amazing. Great artwork, as many others have noted. :)
What a great day here on AT! This tour and the next one are both such well done small spaces. This one the more modern and masculine, the next more eclectic and feminine, both using the space so well and maintaining a spacious, tidy and uncluttered feeling and so expressive of their owners personalities! My take away idea from is the ceiling lights and keeping things tidy. I would love to have Jarret and Michelle from the next tour team up to do up my 336 sf!
I feel bad because didn't thank Jarret for sharing his space and ideas in the earlier post. Thanks, good sir! Loved it!
This is the most amazing, cohesive use of indoor and outdoor space I can remember seeing on AT. I didn't even realize until I read the comments that the walls were white - there's so much life and color in this tour. Jarrett's art collection is amazing and personal. I'm inspired!
FWIW, I believe the "Obama candle" is actually St. Martin de Porres.
okay so I echo what everybody else has said, but I'm interested in your pavers. I love the look of spacing them apart like you did, but I'm worried that my patio furniture would fall in the cracks. I noticed you have a table and bench. Ever have that problem???
I have the Obama candle too and found mine in San Francisco in whatever the heck the neighborhood is UP the long hill from the 24th/Mission BART station. The store had a display in the window that included one bigger than a fire hydrant, AND a clipping from a local letter to the editor full of righteous anger against the very idea of the candles.
So I bought one
Job well done!! The furnishings, the ART..Baby Buddha (Whoa!) Saint Obama (Double Whoa!), bedding, the pillows.. Simply an Amazing, amazing space!!! Your sense of style, balance, color..right on point.
I thouroughly enjoyed the tour (more than once)..saved in my favorites so I can go back again and again..
Sunny
Yes, it is Obama on the candle. Fun to see that in this tour; I have one, too. Bought it @ Just for Fun here on 24th Street in SF.
Thank you for making me rethink my preferences. I thought I loathed modern and minimal, yet I think your home is perfect. Just the right balance of wit, purpose, and pleasure.
Yes to black men on AT. Double yes to Jarrett who is so easy on the eyes!
Very Nice! Love the artwork!
What a gorgeous space! It's clean and minimal, but still personal and comfortable. This is "modern, done right"!
Oh, THE ART IS FABULOUS ! His personality really comes through with his choices, and they all work beautifully with the flow of the space and limited colour pallets.
I love the mix of warm woods and metal/tech elements. Balanced beautifully with art, creative lighting, and rich colours, the whole rythum of this home is like visual jazz.
Love!
Looking sharp.
Pretty darn close to perfect! Everything works together so effortlessly. Kudos and thanks for sharing!
gorgeous...and the apartment is very nice too.
I find the bedroom artwork rather creepy.
The kitchen cabinets are nice, I like the clean modern look.
Love it, love it, love it. Jarrett of the Beaming Smile, can I be your friend? Invite me over and I will cook in that great kitchen. Could your landlord pony up the name of the cabinet company? And your art is over the top.
I've seen so many classy spaces on AT but yours really look like some nice person lives in it and REALLY living in it. I wish I had known you when I was a kid because you make cleaning up - not look like a chore - but some kind of coolness. I like your idea of streaming music all over the house, especially the bathroom, just so you won't have to turn it up loud and bother the neighbors. I also like that you put logic and aesthetic working well together. Thank you for the beautiful tour.
Eames? Huh? Was there, like, a home somewhere in this post? All I saw was the good looking guy....
Everything Thorndale said: ditto. Great looking space and great looking man. Really like the focus on Black images. I don't think I could sleep with the big red and black buddha over my head, but it absolutely POPS!!
style on fire!
Love it!!!! All of it.
Great place!
The saint candle is St Martin de Porres.
I'm in love! Not sure if it's with Jarrett or his place! Seriously, this house really reflects the homeowner, which is what I want to see more of in AT. I'm bored with the same old cliche'd pieces of MCM. Thanks Jarrett! (also, I love Echo Park-great neighborhood)
Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for all the great comments! I'm quite surprised at the response; it feels really nice.
A few people had some specific questions so I wanted to answer them:
The prayer candle is indeed Barack Obama (2012!) - it was a gift from my brother, he got it in Mexico City.
@p5harma - the baby buddha piece is signed "I. Phraphan" but I haven't been able to find ANY info about the artist at all. Because I would love to buy more.
@alliebear - for the large artwork I've been using Universal Art Gallery/Framing in Venice. the other simple birch frames are from Ikea with cardboard mattes from Aaron Brothers.
@robcurran - my landlord put in the pavers. I twist my ankle an them almost everyday; I'm surprised I haven't broken one. lol. I'm sure the chairs slip off as well.
@mollyfromplantiques - the outdoor table and chairs I believe are from Blu Dot, they're my landlord's. Let me confirm that for you.
@jukesgirl - the cabinets are Ikea : )
thanks again, really glad you like my place.
Jarrett
Amazing!!! Jarrett is gorgeous and so is his home. Love the Edison lights, they look like stars on his ceiling. Now I'm going to go home and start throwing everything out (I bookmarked his nesting coffee table, just love it).
Cool, clean space that has not been overly designed and great art!
Love your place (other than the saint obama candle). Not an "Eames" lover but I barely noticed your as I was so busy checking out all your great stuff! I just cant believe this is 550 square feet - great place!
Thanks for all the compliments on the art!!! For any questions regarding the piece in the living room (LIBERATION BEATS), the artist name is Aly and live in LA. alyxosluman@yahoo.com
Thanks again
I like e I like e, BROOKLYN IN THE HOUSE !!!!!!
Ok, maybe this is just me, but if I was having sex with someone and looked up to see a giant baby head looking down on me, I wouldn't be able to keep going. I mean, that painting totally kills any thoughts of sexy time.
Great place! One question on the shelving for your turntables and LP's-who is the manufacturer? Can't find it on the website and that looks like a great solution to my vinyl dilemma.
i love the red details!

Huge crush on this place and Jarrett.
Love the clean style -- makes me want to go home and throw a lot of stuff out! Handsome guy with a great smile, too!
Jarret,
Beautiful home! Where did you get the modern white planters? I love them!
A personal space with a welcoming feel. Jarret you are super bad.
Jarrett, I have gotten a lot of good ideas from your home tour. And I too, am very happy to see Black people on Apartment Therapy!
Kudos Jarrett! Love the place and REALLY love the LIBERATION BEATS art, (actually, all of your artwork!)
Love your home. Feels so cozy. Doesn't look 500 sq...Nicely done!
Uhmm...time to throw those tangerines in the trash bruh...
I really like the architectural choices that your landlord made for this house; I do wonder if he bought during the bubble, and chose to build in an income unit? It would be great to see house tour of the whole place. I imagine his side is equally cool.Too often, I find myself grumbling about how AT's apartment photos are focused on the furnishings, rather than the relationship of the space to the furnishing. Your beautiful apartment reminds me of just how architectural mid-century modern furniture can be, and how it can provide a structure for personal expression. All your stuff works - right down to that bangin' Duck.Concision is a halmark of mid-century modern design, and your choices are both practical and concise. What a good example of how small spaces and mid-century modern furnishings are great choices, today. It also helps that you've taken, or someone has taken, excellent photos of your apartment. Are the bulb lights set in recessed pots? Keith Haring... Like you place wasn't already awesome enough! Super-fun accent. Are those MoMa stickers?
Hi Jarrett, I just discovered your place and I think it is very inspiring! I love everything but I have a crush on this beautiful blue, gray and white modern art print on your kitchen wall. Would you by any chance have the name of this work? I know that your article was published last year but I hope you will see my request. Thank you so very much in advance for the info.
