Name: Jason, Marisa & Jameson
Location: Dallas, Texas
When we first saw our home listed for lease I was unsure of whether it was right for us. But once Marisa helped me realize the beauty of the hand crafted wood work and convinced the owner to swap out the dated, dark forest green carpet, we moved in and fell in love.
Our home is a detached guest house with a gable roof. It has a second story loft bedroom with a fun spiral staircase...sometimes difficult to navigate during late nights. We were able to partition the large main room into a living room, an office/study and a dining area. We are still amazed at all the high quality details that the owner put into the wood-working...custom framed tree, sun ray design, custom cabinets, built in liquor cabinet, and intricate pattern inlay on the bathroom door.
I am an art director by day and dabble in creating terrariums, paintings, furniture and sculptures in my free time. Even with our combined creative capabilities, we found that it is harder than we ever realized to create a home that is cozy, clean and stylish.
Our style is a mix of Marisa's love for mid-century modern furniture and my eclectic, quirky interests. We enjoy staying home and listening to vinyl on our vintage hi-fi while cooking, relaxing on a lazy weekend afternoon, or having an impromptu dance party…we have favorites for each situation.
One of the challenges with living in a smaller space is not accumulating excess stuff that clutters and makes it feel claustrophobic. I am a dumpster diver and weekend renovator, but luckily Marisa gently convinces me to not pick up everything I see on the side of the road.
Now that we have our son Jameson on the way, we are on the search for a home that is a little larger so our family can continue to grow. We will be sad to leave the home we created here, but we won't settle for another home that isn't just as cool!
Thanks, Jason!

Wood walls are something you love or hate. I LOVE them because they are cozy without being too dark. They give a natural woodsy feel to a home.
This is a lovely home except for the snow outside. ;)
Where is that sofa from?
I love the kitchen!
I saw a place that was very similar for rent on craigslist, and it also had horrible forest green carpet. How did you convince the owner to change it out? What wonderful bartering skills you must have!
Personally, I would find all that wood to be overkill but you've worked well with it. I do appreciate how you've worked with the vintage '70s decor. Very cohesive and pulled together.
I love to see homes where people have worked with what is already there. A lot of renos gut perfectly good places because they are not the style of the owners/occupiers, and it does my heart good to see people not pulling everything out or painting it all white. (I say that as someone who loves things white, but knows that things go in cycles - "we should paint this wood" followed by "why did they paint this beautiful wood?!")
Finding a place that suits you, making little changes, freshening up, replacing things that really need it, and putting in your own personal touches and furnishings... fabulous. :)
Love this house!! I wish we'd have gotten this lucky when looking for a rent house in Dallas as well!
This guesthouse is amazing...and your furnishings go perfectly with the fell of the place (at least I assume it's your furniture). It's too bad you couldn't figure out how to make the place work with a baby...
check out Little Forest Hills for affordable 2-3 bedroom houses to rent. it's a great neighborhood and we love living in it.
I totally agree with another poster that while I generally detest carpet, the carpet in this place looks...dare I say...luxe? Also, spiral staircases, while viciously cool, do not lend themselves to being baby-proof. I would move from that place too if I had a baby on route.
This place looks cozy, both inside and out. All of the wood makes is warm and inviting, everything comes together quite nicely. You must love it there! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
Wow I'm surprised there are homes like this in Dallas! Neato.
Really cozy, and I like the diagonal wall wood orientation.
I don't normally like so much wood in a space, but your home looks very cozy and warm.
I'm impressed! There is no way I would have seen the potential here, much less actually be able to make it look good!
Apparently I am very ignorant...I did not know it snows in Dallas. :) Great home!
Listen up, AT: We need to see more of this house!
so lovely. very cozy feeling.
I love the sofa, My I ask where you get it. I have been looking for similar one for my house.
