Jen & Eric's New Adventure

House Call

Name: Jen & Eric
Location: Winooski, Vermont (across the river from Burlington)

After a decade in New York City my husband Eric and I decided to move northward to Burlington, Vermont. With the move, we were looking for a less hectic pace, affordable living, and a new adventure. Following a home search that had us looking at everything from decrepit frat houses to closet-less shacks with six-foot ceilings, the perfect first home for us ended up being a new, energy efficient condo along the Winooski River front in downtown Winooski, Vermont — just across the river from Burlington. We’ve attempted to transform our generic, blank slate of a modern home with midcentury modern details to add visual interest and touches of our personal style. Having always lived in rentals with boring off-white walls along with painting restrictions, wall color was first on our agenda. Shades of Benjamin Moore blues and greens give our space a vibrant personality and cohesive feel.

The furnishings are a mix of eBay and thrift store treasures including a Lane Cedar chest, atomic starburst end table, and vintage flower clock; alongside retro-reproductions including diner-style bar stools, atomic-inspired lighting, and a custom made Eames-style coffee table. Smaller touches include a vintage magazine rack, antique radios, flour and sugar containers from the 1950s, a working rotary-dial telephone from the 1960s and a vintage starburst tissue box. The light fixtures over the dining table and bar are from the midcentury modern collection from Rejuvenation.

Our ultimate goal would be to replace some of our not-so-stylish pieces, like an old couch and IKEA TV stand, with midcentury modern-inspired pieces. Much like finding our apartment itself, we’re learning that finding each new accent piece is like completing the puzzle of our dream home.

Thanks Jen & Eric!
