Name & Location: Jenny in London, United Kingdom
My Favorite Room: Office
Specs: 128 square feet
This room on the first floor of a detached house in the outskirts of London had a makeover in April 2015. Its owner- blogger Jenny Kakoudakis - decided that the room needed to have big impact as it would be featured on her blog as a DIY project. After being introduced to darker paint through the books of Abigail Ahern, Jenny painted two walls in a very dark shade (Farrow and Ball Railings) while the wall opposite her desk was dressed with a black and white mural of a tree by Surface View.
The purpose of the room was two-fold. While this is the room where Jenny retrieves to work on her blog (usually at un-social hours, when everyone is asleep), in the afternoon her six year old son does his homework there as well as sit in front of the mural to read favourite books on a pile of cushions on the floor.
Jenny used her existing IKEA furniture (Billy bookcase and MICKE desks) but added black Eames DAW chairs and Anglepoise Mini Type 75 lamps in Alpine white to keep with the room's monochrome decor.
There is also a 3-arm suspension pendant from Sotto Luce as well as grey/white/red cotton ball lights in the reading corner, both of which add the fun factor for her son.
The room has come a long way - when Jenny and her family first moved in 18 months ago, there was artex on the ceiling and textured paintable wallpaper as well as terracotta carpet, most of which Jenny removed on her own (a plasterer was called in for the artex ceiling). Initially, the room was painted in a very neutral grey white color and was used as an interim office for her husband, before Jenny finally taking the room over and claiming it as her own space.
The room finally caught the eye of Abigail Ahern and it was also featured on the interior designer's personal blog.
I would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of going "dark" to just have a go and I promise you will not look back.
