To create a not-too-cutesy big boy room for my son I reused nearly all of the pieces from his nursery, but this room has a much older feel simply because the walls are now a more mature color (Farrow and Ball's Light Grey).
I opted to stack the mattresses in an "L" shape so that my son would be able to crawl up to bed all by his big-boy self! (He is handicapped) The bottom mattress sticking out doubles as a reading spot under our sunny window. Also, the void under the top mattress is stuffed with boxes of out of season clothes. It works so well for us and I think he is proud of his room! (*and yes, the bookshelf is anchored to the wall).

Love that you re-purposed his furnitue and love that idea of his reading space.
Love that he crinkles his toes while he's reading; too cute. And You must sent me that cute stuffed lion sitting on the chair. :o}
Nice room.
I love the L shaped mattresses, that's a great idea
Wooden blocks are the best creativity-stimulating toy you could give to a kid. Great idea!!!
I love that you figured out a way to arrange the mattresses to meet your son's needs and give him independence. It also look like a cozy reading spot and place for parents to sit and read bedtime stories.
@lyonstill Looks like a Jellycats Cordy Roy lion. We have the aardvark - my daughter loves it! So soft.
Is his bed just a mattress and box spring on a frame? It looks pretty low and I like that. We've been looking for our son's first big boy bed and I like this set-up!
I love it! The colors are great, and I really like the mattress idea.
Love it! It's really beautiful and cozy. and the L shaped mattress thing is a great idea. We're about to switch our 4 year old to a twin bed, and were planning to get a trundle because she and her little brother enjoy having sleepovers in her room so much. But now I'm thinking of arranging the mattresses like you did, since that would save floor space and still probably give my toddler plenty of room to sleep on the lower bed.
Can you tell us where the ocean art over the dresser is from? Or is that one of your works? It's lovely!
Martina from My MCM Life: Thank you..that was sweet of you to send.
Thanks for the comments! The mattres situation is just one mattress on the floor and then one mattress on top of that... with sturdy boxes under the top mattress to hold it up. We can easily move the boxes and flip the mattress around if/when we need a big guest room.

I like how you have the crib mattress on the floor too! I think it's smart and a better appearance then a bed rail if they might roll out. Perfect little space to read by the window too. Simple and great looking just like I like!
looks fantastic
where is that bookcase from? it's great for a kids room!
The bookcase is from Ikea, a couple years ago.
Hi! I was wondering where you found the plane! We are looking for something similar for my son's room. Thanks!
What a sweet wonderful room (and adorable little boy). I too love what you did with the mattresses. Very nice.
