- What I Love About My Small Home:
- Although the apartment has collectable designer pieces, the apartment was furnished on a very low budget and we paid very little for our furniture. We have a personal connection to almost every piece, and with every piece there's very a personal story as to how it was acquired.
With the exception of a very few ikea pieces, everything in the apartment is either hand made or restored. The origami sculptures, bookshelf, coffee table, and dining table (made of church floorboards) were made from scratch. Old Eames shells and the DJ booth credenza were once in horrible condition.
The apartment is very modular. Doors on either end of the credenza open up to reflect sound from speakers hidden inside the credenza and diffuse sound. The coffee can lengthen or shorten. The living room can also be quickly converted into a photo studio by simply moving two pieces of furniture and setting up foldable backdrops and lighting equipment.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The space is very irregular. Making CAD models with different furniture configurations helped to optimize the layout. We prefer a lot of open space, but we also wanted a large bookshelf , a full dining table and a DJ booth. To minimize the furniture footprint, we chose pieces that do not extend far from the wall. The TV credenza, my desk, and DJ booth credenza are only 15" deep, and the bookshelf is 12" deep. Furthermore, most surfaces are less than 30” tall. My bed, the TV credenza, and coffee table are all around 15”. By providing more space vertically, the apartment seemed larger. Storing our bikes was an issue as they're always visible. Thus, we chose minimal bikes, such that they simultaneously served as an unobtrusive decorative elements when stored in our rooms.
We have 20 chairs in our apartment and storage is an issue. However, we opted for stackable Eames chairs and Aalto stools that store easily in our coat closet. When we are not entertaining only 9 chairs are out.
