- What I Love About My Small Home:
- Although the apartment has collectable designer pieces, the apartment was furnished on a very low budget and we paid very little for our furniture. We have a personal connection to almost every piece, and with every piece there's very a personal story as to how it was acquired.
With the exception of a very few ikea pieces, everything in the apartment is either hand made or restored. The origami sculptures, bookshelf, coffee table, and dining table (made of church floorboards) were made from scratch. Old Eames shells and the DJ booth credenza were once in horrible condition.
The apartment is very modular. Doors on either end of the credenza open up to reflect sound from speakers hidden inside the credenza and diffuse sound. The coffee can lengthen or shorten. The living room can also be quickly converted into a photo studio by simply moving two pieces of furniture and setting up foldable backdrops and lighting equipment.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The space is very irregular. Making CAD models with different furniture configurations helped to optimize the layout. We prefer a lot of open space, but we also wanted a large bookshelf , a full dining table and a DJ booth. To minimize the furniture footprint, we chose pieces that do not extend far from the wall. The TV credenza, my desk, and DJ booth credenza are only 15" deep, and the bookshelf is 12" deep. Furthermore, most surfaces are less than 30” tall. My bed, the TV credenza, and coffee table are all around 15”. By providing more space vertically, the apartment seemed larger. Storing our bikes was an issue as they're always visible. Thus, we chose minimal bikes, such that they simultaneously served as an unobtrusive decorative elements when stored in our rooms.
We have 20 chairs in our apartment and storage is an issue. However, we opted for stackable Eames chairs and Aalto stools that store easily in our coat closet. When we are not entertaining only 9 chairs are out.

Really lovely! I love the restrained colors and slim furniture! Of course, the MCM pieces are my favorite!
That sculpture over the bed is FANTASTIC.
Finally an apartment in this contest that doesn't have something on every square inch of space. I love the editing and thoughtful placement of each object.
I love the spareness, order, and serenity in this apartment. I guess I'm just so tired of the clutteredness of the trends that have dominated the past decade.
I actually really like the floorplan of your home.
Really admire the restraint. Careful editing is much more difficult to do than simply piling in every favorite thing. How refreshing.
CJMRAE--like
Can we get a post on those origami sculptures?
Where do I get that bike rack?
So great. I think we've seen this home before.
The bike hook is from Mountain Equipment Co-op. I have the same one. It's fantastic.
At 875 sq ft, I think this is a ginormous space for one person. Especially in New York, NY. I love everything about your place, mostly the simplicity.
@SANDINMYUNDERPANTS - I'm pretty sure two people live here. The post refers to "we" several times, and there are two bedside lamps.
Lovely space Jeremy, from the artwork above the credenza, sofa and bed to your awesome dining table. Proof that furnishing a home doesn't need to place gaping holes in your budget! As a fine of optimum lighting I love your window as well.
Overall great place. Another entry in which would be great to see in person as well.
ive seen this here before

This is my favorite so far. The style is so me. Love the cleanness & modern pieces. Those art pieces are just too incredible.
It's very tasteful but seems small for 875 ft, compared to some of the other entries.
This is a bit Spartan for my tastes - not even a loose cushion on the sofa? Hard core!
The origami sculptures are lovely. What are they constructed out of? Were they designed in CAD as well?
Wonderful. Makes me want to go home and bag up all of my junk and donate it.
Found the answer here: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/jeremys-recent-grad-resourcefu-130747. Very cool guys!
Not a lot of changes since we saw it last time, but still worth another look. Does feel a bit sparse for me, but I love all your DIY. Where did the bedroom desk come from? I have been looking for the perfect narrow desk for my office nook. If I find out you made i'll be impressed, and sad.
The comments for this entry remind me of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Emperor's New Clothes."
PROFKD, I wanted to buy the malm desk from ikea that goes with the malm bed. However, it was out of stock, so I built the desk myself.
PI, here's a tutorial for the tessellation

Love this apartment since I first saw it in House Tour. Love all those sumptuous woods.
The photos in this entry don't give it much justice though. But I hope it wins!
Interesting even though it is rather sparse...I bet you get a lot of work done cos there's not much clutter! Cleaning must be a breeze!
I love this apartment, but how many times is Apartment Therapy going to showcase it?
Whoa, is that a sungka set aka mancala I see on the table. Cool! Awesome space.
I applaud the restraint (even though I'm not a minimalist) and how everything fits together stylistically. Even the bike looks sculptural.
Love the simplicity and the art above the bed. Nicely done!
THIS is how you do small! Great job!
Love this a lot (except the bike, will never understand why someone would take their filthy bike into the house).
Best apartment I've seen in the competition so far!
J'aime!
I love this. To me, this is the winner. It's a tad spartan but I'd rather have that then too much clutter.
Well Done!
This is beautiful. Spare. A man's apartment. A bit to trendy though. Two different Eames chairs? Reclaimed wood all over the place. Oh I confess. I'm jealous.
I would love to make those bookshelves in my house, any chance of getting instructions? Or a link to where I can find them online?
The definition of restraint.
Beautiful! I love the sparseness, it really makes your beautiful art collection shine. Great job. Good luck.
Gorgeous. Best entry in the competition so far! Good luck!!!
remember this one from the house tour. lots of good diys!
EXCITANT!
This is the first one of these contests I've seen. Are there other entries that have already been featured as tours on AT? I thought the point was for the site to find new talent. I'm confused.
http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/jeremy-ralphs-bachelor-pad-hou-124725 I knew I saw it before! Still love it though.
I loooove the recessed lighting combined with the bookshelf. It turns the books as a collective whole into an artistic focal point!
This should rock my world. It has all kinds of great design elements, it's minimalist, it has a bike on the wall and the bike is even coordinated, there are great furniture pieces, it's all what I love and aspire to emulate. But it has NO SOUL. Not one tiny piece of personality. Not one. It is basically like an uber-trendy store's window display. I'm sorry, it just does not do it for me.
Kreibtron, here is instructions on putting together the bookshelf. http://www.the-brick-house.com/2009/09/shelving-unit/
I do not agree with this place having a lack of soul though. You can feel it pouring out of those images. It may not shout but it does murmur and I appreciate that. So many people have places were they can hardy walk or there is only "one" correct path through the house. Jeremy has no fear of company inviting themselves over.
minimalism done well, very nice. the only thing I was a little unsure of was the rug in the living room, but I think I get it, the origami sculptures are awesome
love the simplicity and clean lines throughout the apartment.... nice work
Lovely, but somehow feels cramped at 875 sf,
I love, I love, I LOVE. Soul comes in so many different shapes and sizes, you guys. This space has tons of it. And I'm totally trying the origami tessellations.
those sculptures MAKE it!
Needs some colour and softness in my opinion. maybe just another rugs in the dining area that can easily be moved when you need to set up for a photo shoot or changing to a different colour of the living room rug.. I'm assuming at least two people live here or you are a lucky boy to have a two bedrooms all to yourselves. The art adds good dimensions but there is still so much hard flat surfaces, you need contrast to make those planes work.
awesome.
I love the simplicity!
I agree with everyone that commented on the tasteful editing.
Wonderful style! Love the art above the bed. How do you do that?
