- What I Love About My Small Home:
- My place has incredible character and is a historic home that's been converted into an apartment. It was built in 1895, and I actually open my door with the original skeleton key. The floors are all hardwood and original (redone several times over the years), and their are domes, and moldings, and a claw foot bathtub. It has all sorts of character and is completely charming.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Storage is always an issue and was certainly the biggest challenge in every room. I solved this in several ways, as my place has all sorts of hidden storage ideas that double as decor. I have a vintage trunk in my bedroom I use for linens and towels, and baskets everywhere that hide all sorts of things. I've raised my bed onto raisers and used under the bed drawers for clothing storage and misc. items. Instead of a TV on a stand, I Craig's Listed a beautiful Media armoire that houses my flatscreen and tech. In the bathroom, I had virtually no storage at all, as I have a pedestal sink matching the tub, so some simple white wood storage shelves from Target were pretty effective to help in that area.

ARe there any closets at all in this place?
I love your place! It's so charming and cozy. Is that wallpaper or a stencil in the living room? Love that shower curtain too!
Great place. I love the continuity of style and color throughout. What is your headboard made out of? DIY? Very charming space. Must be hard to get in and out of the dresser in the bedroom, though!
Great to see Fullerton being represented!! Lovely space : )
I like the stripey bathroom wall! Loads of character. It looks smaller to me than 650 sq ft, but maybe that has to do with the angled walls?
Very cozy. Love all the gray. There is alot of furniture in the main living room but you have it organized nice.
It does seem like there are lot of furniture, but I think this is definitely cozy. =) Lovely job!
Love the wallpaper and the stripes in the bathroom. I have a sideways shower too!
The living room is WAY too "historical", I think.
Love the floorplan. Love the historical feel of the apartment but in my own the dark bulky furniture won't do it justice.
Its a little too much stuff for my taste but it's just me. It's still beautiful and looks very organized. great job.
Favorited because it's not like "trendy" or predictable like so many other entries!... and I just really like the dark wood with gray and white. And the bathroom!
I think this is lovely. While there is alot of furniture in the apartment I think it's nice that it's all full sized and completely usuable and not just kept empty for the sake of floor space. If you look at the way the living/dining is laid out you could see that it would be easy to have a few guests over and have a place for everyone to sit and converse or sit and have dinner. There are also a couple of stools in the kitchen for everyday or breakfast, etc. I love it...well done!
Beautifulest!! I love your color scheme so much..
No - there is NOT a lot of furniture! It is just right because everything has a function and it is so ingeniously placed and stylishly blended. Great job!
Beautiful space. You've created a wonderful and tranquil home. I'm sure you're
thrilled to come home to it each day.
Beautiful. I love your colour scheme and layout.
There's really no excuse in a one bedroom, 650 square foot apartment to have a breakfast bar a couple of steps from a dining table. Pick one or the other! Personally I think that changing it into a fitted bookcase would increase storage and reduce the visual clutter.
Other than that little quibble, it's a cool, personality-filled apartment and I can see how delightful it would be to live there.
Usually once during this contest each year, I see a shower curtain that I will fall in love with. It looks like this is it this time... Source, please?
What's up with all the spam? ^ AT should really filter that.
Anyhoo, this space is very well put together, I love the modern pieces tied in with the traditional, natural elements, it's hard to make that work, and here. I love the simplicity of the colors and the way they make the home flow from room to room. Well done!!
p.s the Anthropologie shower curtain is perfect for that tub. I've been considering it for months, and I think you just convinced me.
^"and here you have", I meant to say :)
Thanks to all for the feedback! I actually only moved in about 4 months ago from a 1600 square foot home, so yes, some of the furniture is a bit large, but.. I love it. I was incredibly budget conscious, as im a teacher/photographer. The dining table is absolutely on the large side but it was my mothers, and its important to me, so it came! The barstools I DIY'd, Craigs list find, and yes, the headboard is also DIY.. Just foamcore cut into 12" squares, spray glued to upholstery foam, and fabric covered. I pulled some matching fabric buttons through as well, a little staple gun action and presto!
Since these photos I have updated a few things here and there.. A new super cool pottery barn clock in the kitchen (splurge), a Ralph Lauren chevron-ish style bathrug, and yes the shower curtain is Anthropologie... Which I too LOVE!
I have more photos on my blog for anyone interested:

Thanks for all the helpful feedback, positive and constructive alike!!
I'm surprised at all the comments that say "too much" furniture. Having downsized from a house to an apartment myself, I completely relate to this post on many levels. One of the most difficult transitions for our family has been losing the "purpose" for each room in our old house, not the space. Though there are only three of us, sometimes I don't want to sit and grade papers (I teach) at the same table at which my daughter is doing homework, or on the same sofa where my husband is watching television--in a relatively small L-shaped room, we've carved out a breakfast nook, a dining table, a living room, and even a library with cushy leather seats banked by two large bookcases. This apartment, particularly the way in which the living space is set up, completely makes sense for the way our family uses our apartment, and ups the ante as a stylish tutorial on how to create rooms with multiple functions within a small amount of space. I'm finding it completely inspirational!
I like the "too much" furniture look here.
It makes it cozy- and I love the personal touches like the bathroom stripes and the damask accent wall. The wall leaning stacked artwork is interesting and I am jealous of not one but two dining areas.
I think this apartment is IT so far, for me at least.
I love attic-type spaces.
I love this one!
I love it! My own opinion but I don't think it has too much furniture - everything that is there is balanced and flows. Definately got my vote.
Something about that dining table just makes this special... IDK... I'm feeling quite nostalgic these days for a touch of the old world.
I really love this one, especially the wallpapered wall and the stripey wall in the bathroom. Really great use of a challenging space with all those angles!
I <3 this house, wish i lived there
Very cozy and stylish. Sure your kitty is comfortable too (-:
Oh friends- the damask wall is actually paint.. I used a Royal Design Studios stencil, and it turned out awesome!! Thought you'd all like to know that the whole thing cost me only $75! Win!
lovely(:
I want to live here so bad!<3
How you managed to squeeze so much richness out of monochrome is remarkable. The layering is wonderful - so much so that each time I've gone through the photos again, I've discovered some new aspect I had not seen previously. Superb.
Pat yourself on the back for the stenciled wall - it looks wonderful and it "talks" so happily with your couch throw pillows. Also glad to see Fullerton represented!
LOVE this place! :)
Great choices in color, patterns and furniture! Great use of space. Comfy, trendy, homey, clean and organized! ..also, great pictures, who photographed for you?
I'm a photographer and did my own images.. See more on the blog if you want:

I also don't see the need for a dining table and a breakfast bar less than five feet from one another.....really just pick one. I would likely keep the table (it seats more) and make under the dining area storage for books with a few shelves. I also don't get why the bedroom takes up the biggest room in the entire place?
I love your place...just as it is (or was)!
"absolutely no excuse for a breakfast bar and dining room table".....the funniest thing I've read all day
@Jettsam: me, too!
love love love!!! the colors are awesome!!! beautiful!
Perfectly cozy, the rooms are so well put together event to the smallest detail. The stenciled walls, the color pallet, the antique-y modern looks blends perfectly. FAVORITE.
This is so lovely. Have you seen Salmon Fishing In Yemen, with Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt? This looks a lot like the apartment of Emily Blunt's character.
I usually don't like spaces that have this much in it all at once but I like this space very much. You've done a wonderful job making the space feel cozy and inviting. There's a lovely, kind of nostalgic charm to it; I can almost imagine a Jane Austen or Louisa May Alcott feeling at home scribbling away at the dining table. And I can easily see myself curling up in that sofa with a cup of tea and a good book on a rainy day. Well done.
@Blandwagon: Why can't you have a dining table and a breakfast bar? It looks like she only has two seats at the breakfast bar- what if she wants more than two guests for dinner? I think that is a very strange thing to say...a breakfast bar is usually built into a kitchen but many people prefer to eat facing guests/family or on a chair that is not raised. If someone loves to cook and entertain, it makes perfect sense to dedicate space to both.
Really, really like this.
Love this. And I'd love to know the name of the gray paint you used. :)
Hawt!
