Name: Jessica Hougen, homeowner, and Angela King
Location: Charleston Heights — Las Vegas, Nevada
Size: 1350 square feet
Years lived in: 2 — owned
Since purchasing her Las Vegas home a couple of years ago, Jessica has steadily updated it room by room. Until she moved in, it had not been renovated since it was built. She has done a marvelous job infusing the preexisting features that came with the house with vintage furniture and decor.
As a curator, Jessica has a natural sense of space unification. She has chosen beautifully intense colors to accent and connect each room. Likewise, her roommate Angela, is a talented artist. Her paintings blend quite naturally with the color palette of the home. Much of the decor throughout is inspired by travel and art. In total, this home exhibits a great blend of vintage and modern.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Jessica : Very mixed. A little gypsy.
Inspiration: Jessica : Living and traveling abroad.
Favorite Element: Jessica : Color.
Biggest Challenge: Jessica : Lack of direct light.
What Friends Say: Jessica : They love it! Comfortable and welcoming.
Biggest Embarrassment: Jessica : The sparkly popcorn ceiling in the room that used to be part of the garage- it is the one room in the house that I haven't done a single thing to. I had to leave one room intact to move everything into while working in the other rooms.
Proudest DIY: Jessica : Scraping off the popcorn ceilings in the entire house by myself. And pulling out the carpet (and the layers of carpet pad underneath!) with the help of one friend.
Biggest Indulgence: Jessica : The tile in the entryway.
Best Advice: Jessica : Don't listen to the naysayers- and don't be afraid of color!
Dream Sources: Jessica : A lot of companies in England- too many to list! I lived there for a year, and fell in love with the style. Living Etc. is my favorite home magazine, enabling me to torture myself every month with what I can't buy.

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
I think an island/table would be great in the kitchen!
I have never seen the ornamentation thing (name??) that is on/behind the doorknob. It looks cool! Also, that blue chest in the entryway is great. Thanks for sharing!
I love the kitchen floor and Jessica's attention to detail.
Angela's bedroom is very nice. Lover her duvet.
Very fun house, I like their use of color :)
I like the fish painting. :)
And the carp cushion, and various textiles. :)
nice use of color, but I am not in love. Lots of potential here, but not quite loving it as much as I want to. Love the bed frame....
I like the colors but the patchworky looking couch just reminds me of when my grandma used to cover her sofa with blankets before anyone could sit down.
These older homes and neighborhoods in Las Vegas are amazing, so much more character than the stucco clad McMansions in Summerlin, Centennial, and Henderson with an under-utlized pool house in the back yard. I love that you embraced some of the older original details throughout the house, plus it is not to often that we get to view a house hold that does not look like it came straight out of some furniture show room.
Jessica - Kudos to you, for keeping your home the way that Las Vegas had originally meant it to be - comfortable and FUN!
Afraid that having grown up in the 70s, I'm allergic to the kitchen floor/counters/cabinets, and I'm not feeling the rest of the space either... but the artwork is indeed various and interesting, despite the fact that nothing else about the house is speaking to me other than a few details.
I guess sth is wrong with the comments in this post non-offensive comments keep disappearing whereas in other cases no one bothers to delete the reported spam. what's wrong AT???
It's fun refreshing this page to see what comments have made the cut...I need a life...
That hot pink in the bathroom is killer! I will be checking Olympic Premium swatches for it. :)
me too I guess but until I get one I'll keep refreshing. just for the fun...
Oddly enough, I'm starting to like this house now. I once saw a "seashell" chair just like the pink one in one of these bedrooms and I wanted to steal it. (and I don't steal)
the kitchen is screaming for an island! it would b so great w all that floor space... :)
Can you please post information on the door knob plate of the front door - stunning!
Beautiful space, love the Frida piece too!
i can't get past that super-glossy paint
The entryway is stunning.
^ I hear you
I love your house! I live in Phoenix, and it's often hard to find examples that relate to the kinds of architecture we have here.
I love the dark color walls! I've been thinking about painting my great room a deep charcoal gray and worried that after I completed that job, I'd have to paint the ceiling to accommodate all of that color. I can't always visualize the impact of changes. But seeing your stark white ceilings with dark colors, I'm no longer afraid.
And that glorious pink in the bathroom! What a great color blush to make everyone look beautiful in the bathroom!
Cat eye is so houre? yeesh.
Nice house, lovely wee cat. :)
Love the colors, the fabrics, artwork and plants! But the first pic with the beautiful kitty (without a name?) took my breath away....
thanks for sharing.
I don't love it at all - just not my taste - but I am fascinated by it. Makes me want to know more about the owners and that means they have succeeded it doing what a house should do - express oneself. I feel like if I saw this house in a movie, I would find the character living it it to be a fascinating person.
I didn't see the "art filled" aspect of the title. Nice colors.
Beautiful entryway! I also love the bold paint choices and that pink chair in the bedroom. I understand why people are not in love with the original detailing in the kitchen, but I appreciate that the homeowner made it work with her style. It's not as if it is always easy and affordable to refit an entire kitchen. Sometimes people have to work with what they have.
Wow, two of my comments have been deleted with no explanation. Hey Beth, why??
t3d- Because AT only allows happy, shinny comments. All others are deleted. I assume AT is run by someone sitting on their laptop in a tiny island somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico where Freedom of Speech does not exist.
I like the bones of the house but the paint colors are too dark for the minimal natural light the house gets. The kitchen and bathrooms seem especially dark and cramped.
What's great about this house is that the homeowners didn't just jump in and do a McMansion-style remodel. No granite counter tops, no stainless steel appliances and none of those terrible hanging lamps that are so "in" right now. This is a unique place.
There was no pic 48. Are you being faceticious?
MidwesternMom- I also think it's also a little extreme to the extend that they have been deleted. Comments that weren't even nasty, but just showed some disliking were also taken off.
Ok, I just saw 48. Didn't load at first.
What?! No mention of the cat in the 1st 10 posts? I must not be on AT!
I like the cat and the pink chair. I also enjoy the bitchy comments; hope Jessica and Angela aren't thin skinned. Thanks for inviting us in.
i dunno....
@yul. I think that's why they made the walls glossy.
Agree that the kitchen needs an island...
I don't understand.
The entry is great!
I agree that the kitchen needs something, but at least it would make for a great dance party right now! There's nothing wrong with that.
It's not my style, but I do appreciate its truly personal look that has not been "designed" up the ying-yang. Of course the kitty is fab, too!
I appreciate their individual style, but I just don't think this is AT worthy. Everything from the cabinets to the linens and towels are extremely dated. Reminds me of my grandma's house which is nice, but nothing groundbreaking.
I kept looking for the after pictures :(
The painted walls are nice, but why only random walls here and there? I say commit to the color and lose the white walls. It looks chaotic instead of cohesive.
I live in a space which only has windows on one side and I simply can't imagine using such dark colors. I'm all about color with accessories but the kitchen looks like a cave. I do love the entry and it's tile and all of the diverse chairs are divine. Love the art, too.
Good for this home owner for making the most of the space that she has! This house could easily be considered a 'fixer upper' but not all of us have the money to do much 'fixing up' besides painting and collecting neat furniture.
This is the kind of space that i originally signed up on AT to witness: making the most of your space, be it small, or outdated, or whatever, in an ACCESSIBLE way.
Of late, it seems that the only home tours featured on this blog are of rich people whos' dads own a famous design firm, or some snooty architect with all of the standard, mid-century design treasures that he can buy at DWR. This last post was refreshing, actually!
Using a tea trolley for the microwave is a great idea for people who don't have a lot of countertop space!
Great looking house, but semi-gloss, really? I think I'd paint the kitchen cupboards so as to make the floor stand out even more.
Ugh. Sorry...This looks like the "before", not the after. Don't like any of it!
love the color of the entry table.
Im very open to a wide variety of styles, but really didn't like anything in this gallery (except for the very tall stack of books next to a reading chair). Noting stylish, swanky, crafty, or clever going on...sorry, but I've seen so much better from people that weren't even trying to be stylish. And I agree with the others...it really does look more like a "before" gallery, expecially the outside.
I'm confused......are these the before pictures?
Oh wow....um....not feeling it or getting it at all. I too was wondering if these were the "before" images. And I can't believe some of the art is hung SO high.
LuLu
Hard to like the vintage when you are vintage yourself. I already lived though that stuff and dont find it enduring, however there are some great pieces of furniture
Art filled??? I don't see that, and what is up with
that piece of board on the wall in picture #5? I agree with others..I thought these were the before pictures.
I love the colour choices, especially in the living room and entry, how they complement the timber. Like bulbkit, I think it's refreshing to see a place where someone has done the hard work of making a mix of inherited and found items and their own taste work in a pleasing way, rather than just buying everything new in easy-peasy neutrals. Especially love the fourth pic: acid yellow+green+turquoise blue against dark purple and brown=wow!
I have a narrow hallway like this one and love the collage idea. Are the postcards glued to the wall? It doesn't appear to have a "backing" and would like to replicate this. Thanks.
I think this house is awesome. Where's the love, guys? I don't understand why people feel it necessary to make negative comments at all. I thought AT was for celebrating style, not for dissing on it when you don't agree with what you're seeing. I think Jessica's intermittent use of color is fabulous; it injects some personality into her space while still allowing the white walls to keep things brighter.
Liked: the pink bathroom, Angela's bedroom.
Disliked: the 'granny style' touches in the living room, and Jessica's room, looks like the houses occupants are of at least retirement age. The kitchen walls were a pretty scary color too.
This one didn't work for me..im sure it suits them though, each to their own...
Loved: the front door, the entry tile, the pink chair, the originals light fixtures in the bedrooms!!
Couldn't agree more with bulbkit and cole!!!! Why ya gotta be so negative??
Hi all, this is Jessica. Sorry I haven't responded to your questions and comments sooner- I left the country the day this posted, and the day I got back I lost my cat. Thanks for the comments on him- his name was Roman, he was the best cat ever.
What was left out of the description of our place is that I haven't had the time/money to do anything to the kitchen yet. It is the next big project on the list. I'll be replacing the floor and countertops/backsplash, and hopefully the appliances. I'll also be painting the cupboards, and buying an island to better utilize the space.
For those of you that liked the accent piece on the front door, I'm sorry I can't help- it was there when I moved in.
The postcards in the entryway are simply glued to the wall- there is no backing. I just used a craft glue stick.
Thanks!
Not really blown away that much. When I got to the sofa and chair layered with old bedding I stopped. The kitchen floor needs help.
Please paint or replace that kitchen floor.
Otherwise, good job.
