Practical form and function-have a place for everything but use cute baskets, trays etc. for mail, keys, dog leash etc. Mirrors for light, trick the eye to thinking it is a bigger space, and for out the door peaks at lipstick. Items that represent you-don't want to feel like you're walking into just anyone's home, but YOUR home-pictures, souvenirs, family heirlooms, garage sale finds that spoke to you etc.
